Angry Windscreen pitfalls..?

Bloody stone from a truck hit and cracked windscreen, so replacement needed..!

Anyhow, having seen the usual pitfalls about vin slot etc are there anythings I should be making sure of before hand..?

Who's best to do this, I want it done properly with factory seal or as near a damn it.

There was a fitter on here (Dave iirc) possibly based nr Bedford, who seemed to take pride in his work, I'd travel to him if it meant a hassle free top job..!

Finally, I'm covered by insurance with excess of £50, but as I have reg no. of lorry that caused this can't I claim from his insurance..? Not appropriate to stop as it was a busy DC.

i used to be a specialist fitter for RAC AUTOWINDCREENS, cant go through someone elses insurance for glass (well pretty certain, never heard of it anyway)

when ring windsreen company ie autoglass/ autowindscreens etc demand a genuine screen from subaru, they will prob and try and palm you off with one of there own, and there never the right shape or even the right size, with new trim and trim clips, make sure its the right tint, imported cars tend to use bronze glass rather than uk green, check car prior to fitment, things like the plastic scuttle and clips etc, cause they do break and they wont admit it was them ( you can usually sign the paper work first stating there is no damage or scratches etc) when they cut the glue back, they will scratch the paint a bit in the apperature ( lip where glue goes and screen sits) if this does not have proper rust primar applied then you will get rust where you cant see, this is why you normally see cars with rust coming from screen trims, if you wanna be really carefull, then take some pics of the screen and trims first so if your not happy you have some proof of wot is was like and how it should be,

basically if i were you i'd stand and watch over there shoulder

as old bob says dont let em palm you off with a cheap screen,i had a 307 done by autoglass a few years back and it was a cheap one and the heat reflective tint was completly different to the standard.
they of course insisted it came from same factory as the peugeot.
moral of the story always demand original parts are fitted.

never have a companys own screen fitted, having been to the factory and seen how they were making them im not surprised of how badly they fitted, if you cant get a genuine screen then someone like 'pilkington' is a very safe bet!

from my experience getting mine done a couple of months ago as above watch the guy like a hawk if possible. i got a nick of paint taken off (no worse than a stonechip, but that's not the point) and as i had no way of proving it wasn't there before i had to take it on the chin.

mine was done by RAC and they used one of their own screens (i didn't know you could specify using OE at that time) and to be fair i find i don't get dazzled so much at night with this screen for some reason. downside is a weird 'shimering' type effect when i look towards the nearside at one point of the screen, i assume the glass isn't a continous shape so distorts a bit?

BUT the hardest bit is getting a good fitter and as you don't know the guy from adam it's a lottery. my old screen was a replaced genuine Subaru screen but due to crap fitting it had a weird rattle/squeek that i thought was something in the headlining, new RAC screen in and the noise is gone.

sure it'll be fine but good luck anyway

Had mine done by RAC a few months back and it was a nightmare initially. I did a thread on it back then. Bottom line is ask for genuine Subaru screen and wait until they can get one, then take pics of the windscreen surround as they scratched my paint, make sure they cover the car and tape it up so as to hopefully avoid any dings and finally - Watch them like a hawk as they do it. Good point about the primer to stop rust - they did this to mine on the second attempt at fitting the right screen!

Cheers guys, some good points and my worst fears TBH, especially the point about chipping the paint under the screen..!

I'm goig to look back and see if I can find the guy on here who (or was anyhow) a fitter for AG, in Bedford iirc..?

You need to check but many insurance companies tie you to a particular glass fitters, eg RAC.

I've had two RAC Autoglass ones, both their own brand as far as I can tell, both the correct green tint and both with the correct space for the VIN. Both very well fitted with no problems of leaks or rattles. I think a lot of fuss is made about replacement screens. If something is wrong then by all means you can go back to complain or complain to your insurers.

When a local company to me dropped a cobblestone of the back of his uncovered lorry, one managed to bounce up the bonnet, and leave a fist sized star my windscreen.

I called the company involved, and they asked me to bring the car in with my insurance docs..

the driver of the lorry, confirmed what happened,

they sent autoglass round the next day to fit a new screen

no cost to me

I had an RAC windscreen own brand fitted to my 03sti, with the smoked area around the mirror and with the correct space for the VIN.
The fit and finish was perfect.

Shouldn't all twin wheel vehicles have mud/stone guards to prevent flicking debris at other motorists?

Yep, I've bitten the bullet and done just that, National Windscreens..!

They'll be calling me in the morning and I'll more than likely go to their local depot/unit given the weather..!

Told them I want an oem screen, new surround and clips which seemed not to be a problem.. Will wait and see about that..!

Also going to insist on watching, as well as inspecting the car with fitter before and after etc. I really am a fussy bugger..

Will post up how it goes, but doubt it'll be tomorrow as they'll probably need to source the bits (and I'm off to the NEC for the afternoon)..!
