Better to buy from a dealer or privately?
Assume a car to the value of £20,000 for example. Thinking a dealer (not just Subaru) should give you peace of mind and come back if there are problems but privately can save you money/get more for your budget...

Depends if you know the car you want to buy and do all the relevant checks.
£20k privately is a risk obviously ... a £150 banger doesn't attract the same sophisticated stings!
I would always go Dealer at that money ....

Similar NON PPP car with no prodrive extras (springs etc) is £2500 more at the local stealer.
Both cars have the same warranty & i'll almost certainly guarantee that mine will have been looked after better due to the number of times the dealer car has been used as a demonstator!
However..........I can't offer finance & I'm not regulated by anybody.
I guess it depends whether those 2 things are worth the extra money?

I've bought all my cars private. If you're unsure, just get a garage/AA to do a vehicle inspection for about £150.
You will save more than £150 going private, plus, if it's new enough will be under warranty anyway.

Private every time for me. Dealers take too much of a cut. Get the car checked out properly. On a 20k car you could be paying around 3k more than private.

Private every time for me also, if its in manufacturers warranty then the risk is minimal, just remember to do your homework and then do some more homework ,including an AA or RAC inspection etc, just to make sure everything checks out ok,
on a plus side, at least you will meet the owner and make your own mind up about him/her and the situation behind the sale of the car, also you can tell if they have looked after it or not, a dealer will just cover up any imperfections regarding the condition.
