Jet sound from exhaust
Strange question, sorry it sounds vague, but here goes.........
Recently heard a couple of cars (Skyline and an Evo 8) which seem to have some sort of insert within their exhaust pipe which changes the sound characteristics of the car completely.
On acceleration, they just sounded like a whoosh of a jet plane, if that makes any sense whatsoever ?
A friend asked the Evo driver what it was (he was at a trackday), and he said it was just something within the exhaust pipe which made the noise.
I think it may have been a screamer pipe, but thought they were a seperate thing altogether.
Told you it was a vague question, but cant think of a better way to explain it......!
Cheers

Most likely a Jap spec exhaust like Blitz which still has the Silencer Bung still in the tailpipe. This make the sound quiter but on modified cars with higher boost it can make them scream as the gases struggle to get out quick enough which gives a strange jet sound style effect.
I have seen people even drill small holes in the Bung to get different sounds from them.
I may be wrong but that is one way the sound is achieved.

My roller bearing turbo sounds like a jet when it spins down, so I presume it sounds the same spooling up. Coupled with my APS induction pipe it makes some interesting noises

Whooshing sound is a sign of restriction in the backbox.
The Prodrive exhausts on Classics do it i.e the RB5 WR mentioned above.
My Prodrive rear box on a MY00 used to do it above 4,000rpm full boost.
Doesn't with the TSL Grp'N' though as it has less restriction and no bend within the tailbox, unlike the Prodrive.

Agree it must be the bung or a backbox that is restrictive.
A mates car sounded like a jet on full boost because even though it was running a Link ECU with various other mods, it had a pro-drive backbox. On full boost is howled and sounded like this, but quiet in normal circumstances. Compared with a normal PPP car with this backbox it must be the additional gases struggling to 'escape' under pressure causing the change of sound.
I did like the sound of his car.

If both these cars were fitted with tuned length manifolds and the bung fitted as well (to keep within noise regs) they would both sound like this.
Scoobs can sound like this as well with a true equal length manifold, some people liken it to a superbike @ full chat

I have seen an insert for N/A saxos and the like, that goes in the tailpipe and mimics a turbo whistle (from the back of the car ).
This is enough to convince the chavs at Maccy D's that your "Whip" is "Massive" with "Horses" init.

I think everyones getting a bit over technical, the whoosh sound thats like a jet plane is just a car with a nice bit of boost through a decent induction kit as it did on my 2wd sapphire cossie, my 2 rover turbos my r 5 gt turbo, wicked sounds that scoobys dont seem to make.

hi i know the sound you mean new evos do it but i find they do it more with a de cat and without the trim just exhaust flow i assume if your looking to get that noise from a scoob a full system scorpion with de cats will do it as mine does. Also my boyfriend has used the trim you mean from an evo8 -5" and modified it to fit his pulsar -4" and with a slight bend it does a very similar noise and is quieter on tickover.
