Default Replacing turbo, Remaps?

I have a 2003 sti uk standard. I would like to replace the turbo to something that will spool up 500 to 1000 revs later but not cost the earth. If i replace the turbo will i have to have a remap as 600 for a turbo and then up to 1k for a remap put the cost right up. Or should i just remap using this £ 400 remap that mocom are offering. Ideally i want 320 bhp or would be happy with 300 but don't want to spend a fortuna nd want it just as reliable.

it run on tesco 99.
thanks

To get 300-320 out of your STi you do not need to replace the turbo.

Panel Filter, Decat Exhaust, Pump & Remap. All in, circa £1000.

if you change the turbo then you are gonna have to remap it. But wouldn't you want it to come in lower in the rev range rather than higher, aka comes in sooner?

but as said you should hit 300+ with decat and remap, no need to change the turbo.

Leave the turbo it's a good un for your power aims.

Sports cat dp, uprated fuel pump, ported and wrapped headers, 3 port boost solenoid, remap by Bob Rawle or someone similarly skillful. Should see you to an easy 320bhp and similar torque, most probably more.

You don't even need the headers, nor the 3P Boost solenoid on the standard turbo. The two port option will hold boost easily enough.

Here are some prices (new). Be patient and you'll get all these for sale on here for a big saving.

Decat downpipe: £250 OR Sports Cat Downpipe £500
Decat exhaust £400
Walbro 255 Pump £80
High Flow Panel Filter £40
Remap circa £650

okay i have all of those items apart from the remap and uprated fuel pump. Would it be okay to fit the fuel pump myself and then drive to get it mapped.
i heard you could use the uprated fuel pump even if you have no mods at all?

Hi mate,

True, but the ported and wrapped headers will keep underbonnet temps down (important), get the gasses flowing better, liberate a bit more power and also make the turbo spool slightly earlier and quicker (real world performance). Not an expensive mod either.

2 port often ok on new ages apparently because of the superior ECU, but 3 port still better if I understand it correctly. You can pick one up for £30 too!

Would have thought the Sti filter would be ok for the job.

BTW Ninja hi flow DP now available from Scoobyworld at £299. Bargin!!

what is the benefit of fitting a high flow downpipe. i have a scoobyclinic back box and resonated centre section from them so could i fit this DP and put the remap back a little bit but still get some of the benefit from it.
or can you only fit the downpipe and you need a remap

the nw age cars have 3 cats in them, up pipe, downpipe and centre section, so you'd be reomving the cat from the downpipe

I have that mod myself But someone on a bare-bones upgrade path would not need that mod to get to the figure he's after. But true, a worthwhile mod, but it's £400.

True, but i heard that only really necessary for 1.5 bar and above.

Possibly, but most people change as part of their "package" for a Stage 1

You'll get the Check Engine Light (CEL) come on though with the cat removal.

(Which is turned back off when remapped)

As its an STi, he only has 2 cats (DP and centre) no need to touch the up pipe or headers for your targets.

Sports cat DP to keep it legal/MOT friendly or decat if you want then a fuel pump for safety then remap should see you to circa 310>320

Try it and see, i'd wager a quid it would come on, but i don't know for certain.

I had already had full decat, cel came one, then remap. Changed exhaust to 3" decat and the cel came back on.

Used the correct words there 'Should not' come on. I have a H&S sports cat and my CEL used to come on after it was fitted, iirc something to do with how the ecu takes its measurments, however nothing since the remap.

Nope STI = 2 WRX = 3, which is why the STI up pipe is stillr egarded by some as an "upgrade" for a WRX......
