Default Storing an Impreza ?

Costs are getting to me now so need to park it up for a few months.

Garaged, apart from cleaning it what else do I need to do?

Battery disconnected?? Tyres let down ?? hand brake off ??

Tips tips ??

why let the tyres down, Surely over time this will buckle them?

I've heard of people jacking cars off the ground when left for more than a year.

Full to the brim with motion lotion to stop condensation in the fuel tank is a good one.

If it's just a few months, just disconecting the bat would be ok. If it's in a garage, you could wind the windows down a bit, to prevent the interior getting musty, and maybe a car cover, or a couple of blankets to protect the paintwork.

Before you fire it up after a long period, it's a good idea to turn it over to get the oil pressure up. I think if you disconect the crank sensor, it will turn without firing.

'til christmas!!?? LOL come off it, don't be so paranoid

Just dump it in the garage and leave it alone, disconnect the battery or stick on a optimate/accumate charger.

I currently have 9 bikes and 2 cars in storage and I wouldn't even dream of doing anything special until at least 6months

Seriously, it won't harm it.

Perhaps if was outside for over 6months you may have the clutch rust on, brakes rust up, get flat spots on the tyres and the trim starting to go green with lichen

But it's inside a garage for 1 and half months. My scoob has been left alot longer than that. If it wasn't for the tracker, I wouldn't even need to bother touching the battery.

I know what you mean fella. Mine has spent 2 x 9 month sessions in the garage whilst I sell myself trying to fund the mods.

Both times all i have done is disconnect the battery and both times it has started up with no trouble.

If you want to keep your alarm and tracker active (which would seem sensible!) you will need a battery maintainer/charger. I've got a low current solar charger which kept mine topped up while it was stored in a car port for around 6 weeks - only got about 3 hours direct sun light per day but that seemed to be enough. Obviously you'll have to use a mains charger if your garage has no windows!

It might be worth pushing it a little way so the tyres are loaded differently every couple of weeks; keep them topped up with air if they lose any pressure too, don't let them down! Putting it on axle stands would save you the bother of doing this, but it probably doesn't matter too much for a relatively short time anyway.

I put mine off the road every winter for 6 months and as above all I did was disconnect the battery. I started it and ran the engine for 5 mins every couple of weeks so that the oil doesnt all drain into the sump.

Loving Subarus has ruined your memory, Simon

Anyhoo, if your going to run it for 15mins every few weeks, you may as well drive it - better use of petrol Unless its not going to be insured (if not make sure you have it covered under contents - and notified the insurer to let them know)

I have an RAC trackstar fitted to my car with battery back up.

After leaving my car in the garage with the battery disconneted for 9 months I loaded it onto the trailer to get to the Clinic and before I left my estate I had trackstar on the fone to inform me the car was moving and was I aware.

I also never ran the car during this time.

Perhaps, if people had seen earlier, what an ignorant **** you were; theyd have saved their time and not bothered trying to help you.

Still on this

I think everyone else can see I'm concerned about my car and having replied to the topic... (only this version) I am in fact reading their advice and taking it very seriously.

I put the opinions of SN memebers far above that of my local garage and friends advice. Once I notice a pattern I'll go with the most common advice.

Thanks to everyone else by the way, GC8 Go **** yourself

after storing my cars i always drained oil out of sump and poured back into engine just before starting to prevent "dry running of parts"

I store my caterham every winter, infact November so in the next 2 weeks I will be packing it away for the winter till March. I disconnect the battery and cover it with a dust sheet. I check every couple of weeks that there is no condensation build up or mold. Not had a problem in the last few years.

Then come Feb / March I will drop the old oil and replace with fresh. I always put some fresh fuel in too, the octane level will fall quite a lot in 6 months so I leave just a few L in the tank and then put 20l out of a jerry can into the tank.

Then I do a quick check over and crank the engine to ensure oil pressure, and fire her up. Take her out for a small drive, just staying local in case anything falls off and then drive as normal.
