02 WRX Vs Clio 182
had a 182 and just sold it for a wrx 02.
was a member of the renaultsport forum and when i said i had got rid of the 182 for the wrx a few members said a 182 would stuff a standard wrx. now i never raced a wrx when i had my clio so wouldnt know. anybody know from experience???. different mags give different performance figures so on paper it looks even???

As standard there really isn't much in it with probably the clio having the edge in the bends and the wrx on the straights. A few choice mods to the WRX would sort the problem out, however a well driven 172/182 is pritty much a match for any car on tight twisty roads..!

Before I bought the WRX I was seriously considering a Clio Trophy.
Stats i've checked on the Net suggest 5.7 to 62 in the WRX, 6.8 in the Clio, so the WRX should be quicker in a straight line.
Since picking the WRX up how have you found the two compare?

I made the same move mate.
I went from a 182 (which I do still miss by the way) to a 01 WRX about 6 months ago. Like I say the clio was fantastic but im loving every second of the scoob and you wont regret swapping im sure.

4wd ~ in other words, although these figures show what would happen if the 2 cars had a race from a set of lights, when it came to acceleration from, say, 30-70, things would be pretty close (until the Scoob was remapped as above).
The handling comparison is interesting. Technically, the Clio may well handle better than a std (pre Whiteline/Prodrive) WRX. However, 4wd gives far more grip of course.

I used to race my mate in his 172 and me in my 52 uk wrx going home from work near enough every day. The road was a good road with excellent visibility and I used to trounce him every day. Dont let anyone tell you any different, the subaru is quicker. A lot quicker. He sold it and bought a bmw 325 cos he thought he would beat me in that. He didnt so he got a 330. Now he darent have a go in case i beat him again

Did the Scoob have better handling, better performance or are you just a better driver than your mate ?

i went from a 172 to the wrx, and yes the rex was quicker. i never got that neck snapping in the clio like in the wrx but when moving the clio would be on its heels. there are loads on here that will say the clio is quicker, absolute tosh!
forget the remap, go for the sti then get that remaped.

I had a 182 pull up next to me in my lightly modded Classic.
i swear he looked over and feckin' laughed at me.
Now going on what people say about these, i thought 2 things 'i'm gonna have my *** handed to me on a plate' and 2 'this could be close'
Anyway i did not count on 3 - lights changed and i destroyed it, traction - acceleration, everything.
It was quick for a hatch dont get me wrong and i'm sure it would give a boggo standard bugeye a run but i obliterated it.
i was so far in front it was embarrassing, and yeah he was trying.
The thing is most people mod their Scoobs with at least a full system and a remap - makes all the difference.
I'd still love to have a go in one though i bet there a hoot to drive

I changed from a 182 to a wrx ra . Obviously the ra is alot quicker in a straight line but at the moment i reckon the 182 was alot faster through the twistys. However a few choice suspension mods and the ra should be leagues above the clio with the 4wd and alot more grip. The 182 was a great car though and still is in my opinion the best all round hot hatch on the road.

I had a go in a friends 172 cup. I found the controls to be too light and vauge and stability at speed to be very compromised, it made it feel like you were going much faster than actually was the case. It didn't really feel happy until it got settled into a corner.
I know i didn't really have the time to get used to it's characteristics but it sent back the feeling that the grip is there.. but be careful with it. Not confidence inspiring from the outset.
The impreza on the other hand (uk classic) keeps stable at much higher speeds over the uneven grounds, and though requiring a more aggressive approach to avoid understeer feels more composed doing it.
I found the clio engine a bit asthmatic really, but understandable really. It's 40bhp and a load of torque down.
With me at the wheel over my favorite b-road the impreza is a much faster car point to point. (edited to say: the speed that would be comfertable in the impreza would be making you work, and nevous in the clio)
Over an unknown back road the flexibility of the wrx engine is just too much for the clio to compete with.
On a smooth tight circuit, like a hilclimb or sprint i doubt there would be much in it, clio would have the edge.
All is true if I were driving, maybe completely different for someone else though.
(Not seen a good old impreza vs. clio thread for ages )

I test drove a clio a couple of years ago and was impressed wit the performance. The steering wheel was awful though it was really flat and not angled towards the driver. It was like drivin a bus

I've since sold my WRX PPP (03) and now have a 53 Alfa 147 GTA, it has a stainless and induction and is suprisingly quick.Power is just over 260 BHP.It does actually feel quicker than the scoob, maybe because of the torque from it's 3.2 V6.A very under rated car and quite rare on the roads, so tends to shock a few.
