the front number plate should be positioned at the most forward part of the car.

Well, in the mot manual, it says, 'one at the front, and one at the rear', it doesn't give exact positions, on my Discovery that's used for off roading, i have made a bracket on the roof, and thats where the plate is, so it's probab;y nearer the back than the front, and as yet i haven't been stopped, it is after-all forward facing... well officer, thats my excuse....plus the fact, if i fit it at the front it'll get ripped off......

It is not illegal to have your number plate fixed on the inside of your windscreen. There are, or used to be, fixings sold to do so.
DVLA V796
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/media/pdf/leaflets/v796.pdf
They have over the last 5 months tried to sort out the Regulations and fixing loopholes They even dropped Reg 14A to do with imports size plates of V976 . Reg14 is the full rules governs the display of number plates, which they have developed into V796.
Reg 14 use to have a statement that stick on Plates "May not" comply with the Reg 14 but by the statement "May not" also means it "May" but can't find a mention of it, a little creative deletion
IMHO

Watching the Irish Rally Chamionship & Kenny McInstree (excuse spelling) had his front plate in the standard position but hinged (to allow cool air to rad/FMIC) couldn't be seen when moving but hung down as per normal when braking/stopped.
Looked well smart but of questionable legality?
