The old 4-Star was 97 RON, down from 98, so the same or lower RON than some super unleaded and will poison any sensors.

back in the 70's my old fella had a vw passat that needed 5star petrol
which was withdrawn in the mid 70's ish iirc(i was only 5 at the time)
any one remember the ron ratings for 2,4+5 star petrol?

5* was 100RON I think. 4* is difficult to find; only a few garages are licensed to sell it(and its crap anyway). Major manufacturers used to use SUL for LRP though. LRP was always a good deal cheaper, mostly its been withdrawn now though.

You can still get leaded petrol, used to run my tweaked Alfa 33 on it a few years back. http://www.leadedpetrol.co.uk/index.html 99.7 RON according to the website, trouble is I found it too often contained crap (probably due mainly to low turnover) which blocked jets in my carbs, eventually decided that Optimax did the job and saved a lot of hassle so switched.

Edit - sorry GCB didn't read your post - but I do have to say when jets weren't blocked it was a bateer fuel for my car than Optimax.
