If you have to can you run a 06 sti on 95 ron petrol? e.g. if you can't get 98 and if you do will the ecu be able to retard the ignition enough to cope?

I haven't a clue about engines but...........
I had the exact same problem. Subaru sales guy told me you can run them on 95 RON. When I asked him what this was based on he said his own opinion as he hadn't noticed any 'power' difference unlike previous versions. However, I contacted the tecnicians at Subaru Head Office and they told me the engine would programme itself around 95 RON so as to prevent damage and hence you wouldn't get the 'quoted' performance. They advised I asked my dealer to reprogramme the engine management system and start putting 98+ in the tank. The car has since been back and forth to the dealership 50 odd miles away at their expense and I can't imagine for one second they would have put super in it because of the sales guy's 'opinion'. So I'm waiting for the first service to reprogramme again!
It was one of the reasons I was keen to buy a new one as living in the middle of nowhere it cost me a gallon of fuel driving to a garage that sells super. However it's so good it's worth the extra drive and I get more time playing in it!

You really should be running it on SUL though; it won't go as well on NUL; no point buying a race horse and feeding it cornflakes!

That's a relief so what this croc of sh*t they all told me? Dealership saying run it on normal unleaded and Subaru telling me to get the thing reprogrammed? And you are saying they are all wrong, confused yes? I'll stick to super unleaded and keep thrashing its nuts off then.

The ECU adapts to fuel grade automatically within certain parameters e.g. it can retard to suit 95 or advance to suit 97 RON! It doesn't need any kind of "re-programming" by the dealer. The only "reprogramming" dealers are involved with is the supply of the PPP (prodrive performance package) which involves an ECU that has been reprogrammed -via software called ECUTEK- by Prodrive themselves.
