had a test drive in a scooby yesterday for the first time ever!!
went to test drive a 1998 classic with every prodrive option fitted to it yesterday with a view to buying, what can i say but wow!!! loved it! the car has done 65k, full subaru history, prodrive wheels, brakes, spoiler, ecu, exhaust, quickshift, suspension, and recaro interior, sounded amazing and went like **** of the shovel! subaru dealer selling with 1yr warrenty, mot etc, only stumbling block is the price, its up for £9495 im paying cash and they said they would do a deal at £8995 but i stll think its way too much. car is mint and i really want it but what do u guys think???? i was hoping for more like £8200?

if you are buying from a main dealer then you will pay top price for the car but with a years warrenty its peace of mind.
you could get a uk 02 bugeye wrx for that price

Echo what Pete says, definately into Bugeye territory if you're prepared to buy privately. However, the Classic you viewed with all the Prodrive options sounds uncannily like a WR Sport which is a very rare Classic indeed. If it has white dials with WR Sport on and WR Sport logo'd mats (obviously, easily lost/stolen/replaced) then it may well be. Only 25 were made each year from 97-00, so only 100 examples, making it probably the rarest special edition of the lot. IIRC there were a few spec levels, but if it has the performance pack, handling pack and styling pack then it is a special car indeed. The dealer will be able to confirm it, but a quick call to Prodrive will remove all doubt as they carried out all the work on these cars. A fully spec'd model would have been IRO £30k new.

My mate at work has a low mileage X-reg classic for sale, mint, 8K. He can't sell it. It's a buyers market.
As Pete said, I would be happy to get 8K for my 02 Wagon (Import, remapped - show winning car) Just under 60K - over half of those done in the first 18 months motorway commuting.
I bought it for £9,600 in Feb 2004........ Private.

Well over priced
If you want a good car keep on looking, the prodrive options rate at about 6-7k on top of the new cars price, they are worth virtually nothing now, a 98 will pull 4-5k at a dealers, add 2 k for the rest of it and thats how much money the dealer is making out of you (if not more).
There is a stunning MY00 Type R up for sale in the for sale section which would be a far better car to buy and for 1k more.

£9K
And to think I'm planning on selling my MY97 with 42K and FSH for a litte over half that
Seriously mate, look in Autotrader or Parkers, it's way overpirced. Even if you valued the warrantee at £2K it'd still be overpriced.
It's an old car, you can't get away from that fact.
Depending on the servicing schedule, it maybe due for a cambelt service this year (unless already done) As this was the change over year when the cambelt schedule went from every 3years to 4years. If it's the latter schedule, it'll be due. Or next year if its the previous older schedule. This is a costly job at a main dealers (although it shouldn't be )

I just had my 50k cambelt service done for £206, but not at a dealers There is a little-known-about service required at around 80k where the valves, tappets and shims need to be checked, reset and/or replaced as required. If replacement is required it can be costly. Not many know about it (look for the sticker under the bonnet) and even those that do don't bother getting it done, but if you're buying from a dealer and it hasn't been done and is due, get them to do it before you agree.

Saw a Reddish Blue MY98 WR Sport inc. the Recaros and V4 Type-R Lip on eBay when I was looking for a Scoob... a couple of months ago... Guy wanted 9k and would NOT budge on price.

I just paid 9k for an 02 Bugeye WRX Mint with 50k on it , If you go for a souped up job it WILL have had plenty of stick no matter how well looked after and may cost a few bucks to upkeep , if you buy a standard original and do it to your own spec you cant fail ... imho

I'm selling a MY98 with Prodrive styling (not the performance pack though). It's mint too with the same mileage. And I'm asking £5,500k - so I think you're being had.

Sorry 9K is taking the p1ss. MY99s go for about £6K tops, so even the best MY00 WR or Prodrive is only going to be worth at TOPS £500 - £1K more.
Mind you, if someone's prepared to pay that much for that old a car.......
Fair play for them trying.
Bug Eye territory, although tbh, bypass that car that Subaru forgot, and wait for a Blob Eye. Much better.
Even more visually appealing than the new "Jap's Eye"

If I ever found teh new owner, I'd tell him to pop back to the dealers in a weeks time and ask how much they'll give to part ex it for a new one. He'll be in for a shock.

Well out of that one mate... there will be a good one round the corner. Take your time buying one, I know its tempting to spunk your cash on the first one that takes your fancy, but its worth waiting for the right car at the right price.
If you can insure an STi then I'd seriously look at the White Version 6 STI thats in the For Sale section at the moment, it looks to be a proper minter.. 24k miles, history, remapped for a couple of nice mods.... Well worth the c9k he wants for it IMO.

Grant
