FMIC, worth doing?
Hi guys,
I have an STI type R (98) which is running 270Bhp. I notice that Scooby clinic are doing a FMIC for £650 and was thinking about getting it done.
Would I see any real improvement? Does anyone have any figures before and after?
I have read conflicting reports. Some saying that it is the best mod you can do to a Scooby and others saying that unless your running 350bhp its really not worth it as the TMIC can cope. I know about the lag increase but would the bhp increase if any outway it.
Any help appreciated.
Ta,
Dave

One of the best mods i have done to my car.
Yeah a STI 8 TMIC will also work well, but some of the FMIC kits cost roughly the same, and is definately worth having in this weather
Do it!!!

I fitted one to my MY00 with around 320ps and although it is currently a bit more laggy it makes great noises now and Bob is remapping my car in a few weeks time to take into account the FMIC so lets see what the hand of god can do
Plus even if you get no benefit you will get more noises and it looks well mean now

There was a thread recently on induction temperatures. If you do a search you will find lots of useful information.
Someone may be able to post a link.
Basically on the hottest days it is quite easy to get over 70 Deg C induction temperature with TMIC. If you invest in an inlet temperature guage you will be shocked by the temperatures you see.(change out of £50) On an STi 3 Wagon with 335 bhp I have inlet temps rising with only.2 bar boost. From the cruise where temps are in the 30s a sprint to an indicated 80mph results in 60C and even on a coolish day the inlet temp is off the clock at 69.9 deg, the max it will read, long before 140mph.
A FMIC will add safety and more power will be developed from the cooler charge.
Hybrid FMICs are proven and good value for money. You can import yourself or buy off the shelf in the UK for not a lot of money. One of these on a WRX Wagon with over 420 bhp results in max temps of around 40C even after a good thrashing.
Originally I was sceptical about the need for a FMIC but when I checked out the temperatures and experienced my first FMIC, I wished I had done it long ago.

another thread on here mentioned that sustained speeds above 100mph causes air to partly bypass the scoop.fmic the way to go.(for those driving in germany ,or people who are prepared to actually break the law ) not me honestly

Get strands of wool and tape them on your bonnet. The top of the bonnet is probably, slightly, a low pressure area but my conclusion from the testing I have done is that the TMIC is too small, inefficient and the location is very prone to heat soak that takes a little time to dispell.

FMIC for tuned cars over 350 bhp.
Cooler charge for a lot longer time.
Tried the Sti v8 and now the FMIC, FMIC better in my opinion and no heat soak at tick-over.
Downside?
Makes a mess of underbonnet access
Huge increase in induction noises/dump valve relief
Nothing else.
Extra lagg? not in my experience but the car is rather well mapped by the Scottish Wizzard.

ps: bought my Hybrid from Harvey; top draw product.

I would recommend the front mount for anything running over 320hp....It is just so much more effecient and allows for safe running even in the temps we have had this week...........

TBH i would not say a front mount was essential for a car running 270-280 ish - if you want more cooler air-flow, get a bigger scoop, a intercooler splitter, a slam panel and maybe a intercooler lifet kit (basically two spacers that raise the intercooler slightly)

After a remap which included having a bigger turbo, there is next to no lag at all.
