Default Air con smells?

In the last couple of days, my air con has started to smell like bad eggs, does it now need a full service and re-gassing or something?

That was my first thought actually, but even mine don't smell that bad!

I reckon something has crawled up into the system and died!!

I've just been told that Halfords do some kind of spray that you leave in your car for 30 mins whilst your engine and air con is running. That kills all the bacterial which is causing the problem.

Will post the results later on.

Right then, the job is completed. Cost £11.99 from Halfords, its like a flea killer bomb thingy, simply start your car and turn the air con on full, also set it to recirculate the air, and then set the fogger off, leave it 10 minutes whilst it runs through the system, then bobs your uncle.

Smells lovely and clean again! No eggy smells.

Just a quick note on the air con cleaner!!!!! Beware if you have a bad chest or asthma.....i used a can in my dads Pug and it made him a little ill to say the least, he has a really bad chest from working in the coal pit and he said to me "Don't ever use that f**king gas in my car again"
I use it in the cars i'm import and it really does the job, just make sure you run the car for an hour or so with the windows open as it's strong stuff
Dave.
ps....if you buy it in Maccess it's only around £6 so a bargain!!

Mate . .I see your point - i.e the problem is solved . . But that IMHO is just a bit of a cowboy way of doing it . . .

Get a service and a regas done if you care for your aircon . . .Its just good politics . .Any decent aftermarket specialist (non main dealer ) would do it for around 40 quids . .

I dont think you understood the problem, there was a smell in the car caused by bacteria build up in/around the drier/cooler part of the aircon unit in the dashboard.this happens due to the amount of water and dust/pollen/dirt etc that passes through the drier unit. The smell is similar to that if you leave clothes in the washing machine for too long with the door shut(after the wash has finished),or leave a damp towel in a bag etc.

Most after market dealers use similar chemicals to neutralise smells and bacteria in the ventilation system.

I doubt most dealers (main agent) will do anything apart from regas the system and tell you that you need a new ecu...or something else daft.

Matie . .I hear what you're saying, and I realise the smell and what causes it . .Its just me personally - I get an after market specialist to do it . . .As I said - non main dealer . . .Its just a personal choice . .Cleaned , regassed, serviced - and costs only slightly more - and the work is warranted . . .What else can I say . . .

OK,point taken, but there wasnt any mention of reduced cooling ability of the system, therefore it wouldnt require regassing, and there isnt any possibility of a problem arrising from doing this yourself (aprt from the possible respiratory problem) so would it need a warranty?

Some would wash and wax their car with £10 of cleaning equipment and take pride in it,others will pay £50 for a 'special' valet because they are being told that they will use the finest sponge, highest grade shampoo and a chamois made from a 6 month old tropical lama, and also get the engine degreased/steam cleaned ( even if it dosent need it).

Whatever makes you feel better I suppose...

Agreed . . . . . Exactly . . .Its just to my mind, if it starts to smell, it can only mean its getting on a bit . . .And I believe this will only happen every 2 to three years . . . .SOoooooooo . .Why not be good to your airconditioner and give it a service . . .

And no . .I would not spend 50 ponds on a valet, but wax and detail it for up to eight hours . . .

Some good points there.....this stuff really is not good on the old chest and can cause a few probs ref. my old man . I use these a few days before my punters collect their cars especially if they've been standing around for a while on the boat comming over from Japan as they do freshen up a slightly stale air-con gas but as WRXman rightly points out though when it stinks it's because it's nasty and probably best to get it sorted correctly. There's a mobile guy in South Wales who comes to your house for £55 and also does small paint jobs / dents as well, he's pretty cheap considering!!
Dave.

Just had my air-con tested and a re-gas in my Range Rover. The mobile guy is call the Car Medic, he was there for over an hour, my air-con has been reborn and all for £55!!!!! Worth every penny and if your air-con system is f**d he'll only charge you a small call out fee..........and yes it smells nice
Dave.
