Starting Car

Starting Car
Apologies if this seems like a strange question.
Just been out to lunch with a colleague - With the car in neutral he depressed the clutch, then started the engine.
I almost always park in neutral so don't depress the clutch when starting and was never taught to do any different.
He said it puts less wear on the starter motor.
Any truth in this?
How do you start your car?

For what it's worth I always leave my car in-gear, just in case the handbrake fails (which it won't, but whatever).
I always depress the clutch for starting, even if I've put it in neutral. I believe it does give the starter motor a marginally easier life but I do it 'cos it's often in 1st gear.

I would have thought you should have been taught to leave a parked vehicle always in gear, specially if parked on a hill, it shouldn't be left in neutral anyway.
My Nissan 200sx I remember Nissan saying start with the cluth down even if in neutral and also my Golf VR6 VW said the same so I guess its a common mechanical thang.

Some cars won't start without the clutch depressed, certain Hyundais and Later push button start Renaults are a good example.
However, I have an example where depressing the clutch makes starting worse:
Take an Astramax 1.7 n/a diesel witha approx 220K miles. There was that much thrust play in the crank, that despressing the clutch made starting engine impossible as it wouldn't turn over fast it enough to fire.
This was due to the thrust loading of the crack pressing the big ends against all the crank fillets and putting side load on the pistons increasing overall friction.
Other than that: clutch or no clutch, it's all mainly conjecture.

I always depress the clutch when starting, I'm sure its better for the engine/gearbox/clutch and it always sounds nicer lol..
pssssssssst ST24 doesnt have a choke, its a modern EFi engine
The old webber carb'ed ford engines had an auto choke that reset/engaged when you depressed the throttle before staring. Think someone has got their wires crossed.

sorry for the ignorance. what does jdm cars stand for? i have an import wrx and it starts without the clutch down. stutters a bit sometimes so i give her a few revs to make her feel better.

This is straight from the Subaru manual i got with my car:-
MY03 WRX.
Press the clutch pedal to the floor and shift the shift lever into neutral. Hold the clutch pedal to the floor while starting the engine.
Well **** me, i honestly never knew you had to do that! LOL.
Oh well i suppose better late than never!
Will have to start now then.
But like you mention above it is a good habit anyway incase it is in gear anyway. No chance of lurching forward with clutch down.

Could this be the next Scoobynet Analism???
"You MUST press the clutch when starting, or you'll cause an oil surge that'll lead to early ejaculation of your rotator splint"
