Yep we've used it on our Escort MK1 Sprint car to keep the brake pipes cool as they're a little close to the manifold.

Also used on the downpipe on the Pug 205 Hillclimb motor.

Fantastic stuff ~ But beware wear gloves or your hands will be red raw

Cheers

PS I've heard that lagging the down pipe on a Scoob it keeps the temps up in the exhaust thus keeping the gases moving quicker ~ I can't prove this one and haven't heard anyone else mention this

Mark

OK - how many layers of this stuff are you supposed to put on?

One layer carefully not overlapping? Two layers by overlapping exactly half? Four layers (as before but there and back again)?

Also, what's this stuff made from and what happens when it gets wet/dirty? Does it retain its insulating properties when well impregnated with road/engine grime?

Forgot to ask how you secure the stuff to stop it unravelling as you drive down the road?

Tom

Question

Has anyone used exhaust wrap?

It seems to be on all the really heavily modded cars e.g. the 1000bhp Supras and the like.

But I'm not sure exactly what benefit it would have and what it is used for. Is it to insulate the exhaust/turbo to keep engine bay temps down or what?

Any clues would be appreciated.

We have used it for the last couple of years on the Ford Ka rally car, where cooling has always been a big problem, having such small cooling inlets and a tiny engine bay. Combined with other modifications (watter wetter etc.) it keeps engine temperatures down, make no mistake.

Thumbs up

Cheers Blackscooby,

Just checked Demon's website and found the stuff. I would like to wrap my downpipe with this stuff but unsure of which size to go for.

Spen,

Just got a 2" wide 5m roll from Larkspeed in Leeds for £16.95

Definately glad I did it now after these comments.

I can't rememeber what width and length wrap I bought, but it didn't end up being used on the Scoob as intended anyway ~ mainly on the manifold of a MK1 'Scort

Cheers

Ah, i was thinking of doin my whole exhaust with this stuff on my 3dr (to keep the exhaust gas hot as can be, to improve extraction for more power).

How is it held on (self adhesive???)

It looks like a fabric of some kind- will it wear away if it gets wet?

cheers

Question

If you wrap most of the exhaust thus retaining the heat in the exhaust will that mean more pops & bangs?

Question

I am led to believe that this wrap can adversely affect the metallurgy of your exhausts - the increase in temperature not being accounted for in the design process. On good authority from a reputable, competition engine builder (non Subaru).

May be worth contacting the exhaust manufacturers ?

Cheers

**PHEW** thankfully I never fitted it to my Scoob.

Only fitted to my 205 GTi sprint motor which has a cheapee exhaust that we don't give two hoots to... (OMP jobbie that regularly gets knocked on kerbs etc ~ will never last more than a season in any case )

I thought about the full exhaust wrap, but was told it was a definate NO NO due to the high risk of damage to the exhaust etc. with no benefit at all.
It may be suitable for the downpipe only, but not the full system.

You occasionally see guys using it on bikes - to give your pipes that authenticate GP look. However, unless you keep your car / bike in a 40' trailer van or huge garage near silverstone when you're not using it you may find that moisture builds up between wrapping and pipe... Leading to "oops, where's my exhaust gone ?" moments as the whole lot decays away.

Good point about just doing the downpipe only, hadn't considered doing the full exhaust actually.

I just thought that it would keep underbonnet temps down to help my induction kit get cold air.

Re the rusting away, aren't most aftermarket d/ps stainless and hence not prone to rust?

I've seen a Supra with the turbos wrapped in this stuff too. Think it was in Max Power. It cracked 259mph on the Salt flats in USA!!
Is this a good idea as it will retain the heat longer after a power run and could bu99er your turbo couldn't it, unless you leave it much longer to cool down?

Cool

Any exhaust wrap related questions should be related to Adam M. Adam "exhaust wrapper extraordinaire" M is now an E.W. guru. He's wrapped things that looked unwrapable, and he didn't even break a sweat... what a guy.

Question

Is it easy to wrap the downpipe when it is already fitted or does it need to be taken off?

Not sure I am convinced about this rusting crap.

The aftermarket downpipes are stainless after all. I bought new headers and was told they needed to be wrapped so just did it anyway. They do reduce underbonnet temps significantly allegedly.

I must say wrapping the headers was a nightmare, and I did not enjoy it. But I did purchase the stuff from demon tweeks and according to the box it does increase horsepower! allegedly.

Moray, bugger off.

PS> scientifically speaking, retaining heat in the exhaust gas means the molecules have a greater velocity, meaning pressure waves travel faster along the gas stream. How this is relevant I dont know but BPM use it to market their HPC coating.

I wrapped my downpipe and centre section mainly to keep the volume down a bit in the cabin, and that works!! I seem to remember being told that stainless steel sections could withstand the extra heat retention of the pipe and that the hotter gasses, with the faster extraction that it gives, would give you a possible EXTRA 1 BHP !!!!

Be careful with all that extra power
