Halfords 5/50 oil - Any good?
Usually use Mobil 1 15/50 but when i went to buy some today they only had 1 small bottle, but did have a new Halfords own oil....5/50. Even has a picture of a Scooby on the bottle!!!
It is 5/50 fully synthetic.....would this be as good/better as the Mobil 1 stuff.
Is £32.99 for 5 litres, compared to £38.99 for 4 litres on Mobil 1
Cheers

Will do the job ten times over, if spending money is you're thing! LOL, Do yourself a favour and save some money by buying a mineral or semi,There are lots about and all will meet the standard required for half the price.

If it's the same supplier as their usual oil, then it's Comma. I havn't used it but would believe it's perfectly fine. There's a lot of oil snobbery around, but having said that, use the best quality oil you can reasonably afford. I use Millers full synthetic, not necessarily one of the "fashionable" makes but quite possibly every bit as good!

5w = good cold start viscosity - far superior to 15w
50 - same hot viscosity as the Mobil 1.
Theoretically, that makes it better. But alas, this is due to it using more viscosity improvers to attain the wide viscosity band, so depending on the car's useage environment it may not be.
Bottom line is, when it breaks down it'll probably turn into a 15w-40 if left for too long between oil changes whilst under extreme sustained hard use.
But with a Impreza's 6month/6k oil change schedule that is NEVER going to happen unless the car is seriously abused!!!

Many oils touted as synthetic are really mineral oils with synthetic addatives. I recommend using quality oils from the likes of Millers (CFS), Silkolene (ProS) or Motul (300V), all of which can be had for £35 upwards. Always top-up with the same oil, never mix. Always use a genuine Subaru filter.
On cars out of warranty you may as well DIY if you can. It's no more difficult than any other car. Just make sure you prime the filter (fill to its brim and top up 3-4 times as the oil soaks into the filter membrane) prior to fitting. Always check the oil level with the car in the same place as the flat four sump can vary dipstick readings greatly with the slightest of slopes. Many people disconnect the crank position sensor and turn the car over on the starter motor to circulate the fresh oil before properly firing up after the change, but it is thought that this creates more stress than just letting it run on idle for 5 minutes.

I'm going to get called an SN **** for this (once again) But I would be using a fully synth from the likes of Silkolene, Millers or Motul if I were you, especially since your car is modified. Get the best oil you can, the really good stuff doesn't work out much more (about 12 quid per service if memory serves).

so you guys reckon the 10w60 that castrol do called RS is suitable, thats the stuff chris(wizzard) and bryan(forgotten user name) use.
chris always told me to use the 10w60 in the scoob for some reason and ive just gone along with it.
what would you suggest i use as i've got the 2.5 EJ25 lump?

Two things.
1. It is not a true synthetic but a hydrocracked mineral oil, yet you pay synthetic prices for it.
2. It is just too thick when hot, all its doing is causing more wear due to friction, and the oil pump isnt that impressed with it either, they were designed to run SAE30/40 and SAE50 tops.
Cheers
