Why not fit a Knock Link and see if you have any det or get someone with det cans to listen to it, running on 95 Ron, foot flat on the floor, 4th gear from 2000 rpm to 7000 rpm.
If you are not prepared to do that then it would be wise to run it on Optimax as a minimum

They didnt have 100RON in 1995; it was me who told you that initially. Id use Optimax and as Harvey suggests, if you fit a Detalarm/Knocklink, then youll know for sure whats happening.

Do you reckon I need to use Octane boost?
I use Tesco 99, but have tried Optimax once and thought the car ran better. I have used Octane booster every time since I bought the car. The guy who manages the motor factors where I buy it lets me have it at a really good price but said I am the only person he sells it to. Last time I bought it he suggested that I didn't really need it and in fact it had a negative effect on Optimax.
What do you reckon, do I need booster or not?
A friend of mine has a 96 Sti RA V-Ltd. He said he was told by a local Subaru specialist to wean his off O/booster and not bother with it at all. He's now worried to death hes f*ucked it up as he has run it for 2 years without now.
Thanks

In my opinion; Optimax alone should suit your MY95 perfectly well. For the STI Type-RA Im not so sure... I believe that the '96 STI Type-RA used a Z5 ECU, which is similar to a Z4 with a higher rev limit, but even so, Id feel far more comfortable with a Detalarm or a Knockilink fitted. You could do worse than fit one to your own car too; then youd both know for certain whether the fuel that you were using was adequate.

Just as Simon says you need knowledge of what is going on to make an intelligent decision. You can do as suggested above and get someone to listen with DET Cans while you run WOT to max revs or a K.L for £150 or less is far cheaper than a blown engine. At the same time you will be able to make an intelligent decision on what your car will happilly run on. Optimax only, Optimax plus Nitrous Formula or even 95 with nothing.
The KL will pay for itself in time and if you are tight I guess you could take it out and sell it after you have the knowledge or share it with your RA mate and then flog it (if you are that tight)
