Importing Q?
Hi guys,
Just a quick couple of importing questions:
Im currently importing a pre 96 Impreza & so, from my understanding i wont have to pass an SVA/ESVA test, just a bog standard MOT ...but what will need changing/adding? ...is it just a fog & illuminated switch ...or do i need to change the speedo to mph & possibly the tyres, as with the SVA?
Secondly, can I register it (v55) straight away with my private no. plate? ...or do i have to wait for a registration to be assigned & then go the usual route of changing the plate?
Cheers all
Darren

Youll only need a foglight with an illuminated switch. The car will be assigned an age-related registration number (V55/5); after that you are free to transfer a cherished number to it.
Some JDM tyres are appalling but sports-orientated cars tend to have better tyres. Unless the car was bought by you at auction then Id change the tyres though.

Cheers Si,
Just wanted to know how to get it to a legal driveworthy state & then worry about the rest at a later date ...& Im not actually that bothered about it reading Kph or it being restricted to 112mph as it's a Type RA & would run out of puff soon afterwards anyways!

It'll pass an MOT Daz, but it wont be legal. For that you need 30mph; 40mph and such decals that can be read at night. You could get around this with a simple 'MPH' decal on the binnacle glass; it wont be correct but who would know?

I imported mine last year, and you don't have to wait till the car is registered before you get your private plate on it,
Simply send in your PP retention paperwork in with your V55 and import docs when you apply for the V5 and jobs a good one.

Mick, you may well be right, however: I asked that very question at Sheffield VRO yesterday and I was told that the vehicle had to be given an age related number before I could transfer.

Mick is 100% correct, i just put my PP straight on to my GT-R Skyline without any problems as i have done for several of my import car customers. As long as the plate doesn't make the car look newer than it is then you're fine.
