Steam cleaning the engine bay is fairly safe m8.
I cover the induction kit and MAF only.
If I dont cover the induction cone it drives like a dog, so I guessed that was a bad thing.

not disaggreeing with you japimport, but i heard its a really bad thing to try steam clean a scoob engine, with it being a flat four. thats why ive always left my engines alone in that sence.

anyone clear this up as i would like to give my 95 wrx a clean under there too....

DONT clean the engine unless you want a nice BIG bill for the alternator
It doesnt matter if you cover it up, water can still get into it and then your looking at a 600+ pound bill for a new computer controlled alternator.
Take my word for it, ive forked out 600 quid for one of these

I gotta be honest i damaged my alternator on my classic and it set me back £130 so i haven't done it since but i does look good when done . Next time i think i'll remove the alternator first.

New age models have a computer chip in them that controls the charging, they are unfortunately non-repairable

I think at the risk of forking out £600 i have to agree with Tony i'd leave my engine bay well and truly alone. Bad enough paying £130 for a bog standard alternator for my classic.
Although a mate of mine does his regular without any problems.

Done mine a couple of times on a blobeye and a classic. Cover the alternator well, the intercooler and fuse box. Don't use a pressure washer just a hose after Gunk or similar engine cleaner.

I see no need to cover the IC.
I have IC spray and I'm sure that makes it wetter than a general steam clean. but so be it

The alloy fins on the intercooler are delicate. Its not te wetness that can damage
