Optimax v Tesco 99, I've seen the light
After trying Tesco 99 about 6 months ago, I vowed never to do so again, the car felt sluggish and mpg went through the floor.
So when I tried unsucessfully to fill up with Optimax the other day (the whole of North Hants seemed to be dry), I had to bite the bullet and fill up with 99.
The strange thing is, rather than running like a pig, it goes like a dream. Pick up is strong and it revs better to the limit, fuel consumption is about the same.
The only thing I have had done in the past 6 months is an IHI VF24 and ECUTEK 3 whereas 6 months ago it was an ECUTEK 2.
I specified to the mapper at the time that I run the car on Opti only so he mapped it specifically for this.
I'm going to have to run a couple more batches of 99 to be sure, but if the performance stays like this, I'm sticking with it.

I run a 93 wrx (decat, induction kit and backbox) and picked Tesco cos it was cheaper than optimax and I think its just as good.I think the running like a pig is because of the amount of bio-ethanol in it.
Have a look at www.greenergy.com they are the suppliers of Tescos 99 ron

I seem to be getting alot more mpg with Tescos. Just done 170mile and its just under half full as with the other, ahem, was lucky to get 140!!!!!
Personally I don`t mind paying that bit extra cos obviously gives me better performance and more mpg and above all looks after Scooby.

to be honest my 95 wrx has been running on tesco 99 for all but 1 week since i bought it. the 1st week i ran it on optimax and it didnt do much for the engine. round here optimax is 98.9p per litre and tesco 99 is 96.9p per litre. and tesco give me better miles to the gallon. 40 quid saw me get 180 miles last week. thinks thats 20 mpg i reckon...
£40 / 0.969 (price per litre) = 41.3 litres (rounded up)
180 miles / 41.3 litres = 4.4 miles per litre (rounded up)
(1 uk gallon = 4.546 litres)
4.4mpl x 4.546 (1 uk gallon) = 20.0024 miles per gallon.
oh **** best get my wallet out...

And it's even better now that Tesco are doing 5p off a litre just for spending £50 on shopping that you'd do anyway. I just brimmed the tank with Tesco 99 today at 91.9p, saving me almost £3. And that's while Optimax is over £1 a litre locally, for less octane. Hard choice I must say.

I haven't had chance to try tesco 99 yet, can't find it anywhere in Staffordshire.
The local tesco's have got the pumps for it but they've had signs on since they opened it saying they've run out.
To be honest I fill mine with Optimax except for one time last Summer in the middle of deepest darkest Derbyshire when i was low i put Esso 95 RON in. Made no difference whatsoever.

Is the Tesco fuel really that good? Have always used Optimax, so going on the fact I've just put 47 quid of Optimax in mine, and Tesco's was closer.....doh..
Big notable difference between the two??

ive posted this before but as im a superstar il post it again! try www.petrolprices.com and put in your postcode of where you either live or are if your travelling. it will find the cheapest place for all different fuels inc optimax or tesco and the name of the garage will be included in the info. so if its a shell garage, you know it will be optimax and if its a tesco garage it will be tesco 99.
really handy and the guys that run it give you a bumper sticker for joining lol, aswell as updating it everyday i think.

Just found the Tesco's 99RON at 95.9p/l on the Wirral which is good as Optimax is 101.9p/l big saving to be had here as need to do some shopping at Tesco's too so will get the 5p/l off fuel voucher.

From magazine fuel tests and previous posts on here, I think the only drawback is a very slight loss of power (maybe a couple of bhp on a standard car). I think that's a very small price to pay for cheap, high-octane fuel that seems to be pretty consistent in quality.
