LPG Convertion
#2
Tried to find an earlier thread about this from a few months back. Got a little out of hand though. Try searching for it though. Was very funny, right JZA
Basically there isn't anyone prepared to do this to a Turbo, yet!!
I wanted to have this done to my company MY00, but have had no joy. Was told the next generation systems might work on the Turbo.
There is a converted WRX kicking around (old shape) but no-ones owned up to having it. Not sure about the performance and don't really care. Will use it in my case for running up and down the motorway. SUL for the weekends LPG is higher octane though.
Cheers Phill C

Looked into this myself - no one had ever heard of it! Seemed to be against most peoples religion!!
Spoke to engineers at Subaru UK they told me they didn't think it was a good idea - highly stressed engine etc. Said they thought some of the chaps in Belgium Subaru had tried it - I couldn't be bothered to chase it further. They were also worried about there not being enough additives in the fuel.
Economy and power for the average car is said to be down by about 10 - 15%.
I'd be interested to know if there is someone with one...

If there is there any info out there on LPG conversions for MY01 WRX..the Shell station round the corner from me has LPG arriving in a few weeks time. Its half the price of NUL...performance for during the week commuting doesn't worry me...will use the regular fuel tank for the cross country blatts.
Cheers,
Rich

I've seen a few LPG'd turbo cars and even owned a 300bhp 200SX with a LPG conversion, theres quite a few done  I got mine done as 2500 miles/month is expensive @ 20MPG, and theres no way I was driving some crappy FWD diesel, I do enjoy driving and like my cars to have the ability to make me smile.
F1 in Bolton, Lancashire have converted a few scoobies to LPG, even those with a reasonable level of tune. Its not hard, you just need the right parts, and right person to do the mapping / conversion. Feel free to PM me for more info on where to get in done (in north west and nort wales) or questions.
You do lose a little power, and a little mpg, buts its still well worth doing if your fed up of paying 20 pence mile and want to pay 10p/mile like the focus tdci drivers but cant bear to drive a oil burner!
and yes LPG is 102 Octane

You can have a look at LP Gas, LPG, LPGA, LPGAutogas, Bottled Gas, Butane, Gas Cylinders, Gas Stations, Car Conversions, Liquefied Petroleum Gas, Propane as a starting point and take it from there.
But be aware that LPG can be very damaging to some engines particularly some Fords and Hondas where valves and seats can be damaged (bit like using unleaded in older leaded engines). The above association has a member's only page listing out problem engines although this doesn't include Subarus IIRC.
So if you get it done go to a reputable firm and make sure what their guarantee offers. I would say very worthwhile, subject to above, for a high mileage vehicle. dl

Check out Phil Price (of Phil Price Rally School)
He converts cars to LPG.
He runs his rally cars on LPG (Scooby included.)
His Instructor ran an LPG Scooby on the road, said it was great.
He said that some Companies do not do it quite right so be aware.
Cannot remember the cost he quoted think it was betwen £1500 and £2000.
He said the engines ran superbly with it.
