FAO rich wild. 500+bhp- how to do it (and drivable)
#3
Buy a cossie!
Rich- heres the answer to ur questions.
All these figures are off dyno sheets (SCS's dyno).
Mike Rainbird 2wd saff 180+mph -- 516bhp @ 7500rpm, 358lb/ft @ 4000rpm, 422lb/ft @ 4500rpm, 360lb/ft @ 7500 rpm.
Rod Tarry 2wd saff -- 504bhp at 7500rpm, 445lb/ft @ 4000rpm, 492LB/FT!!! @ 4500rpm, 380 lb/ft @ 7500rpm.
Carl RS500 -- 501bhp @ 7100rpm, 410lb/ft @ 4500rpm, 380lb/ft @ 7500 rpm.
OTHERS- Bruce Read RS500 542bhp 180+ mph
Martin hadland Escort Coz 500+bhp 188mph, 0-60 3.5.
Loads more above 500bhp but u get the idea.
Having all that torque all the way from below 4000 till 7500rpm is why they soooooooooooo fast.
Hope this is of some interest (and PLEASE dont move this to the RS board).
cheers, steve.

JESUS CHRIST!
That's some power! Are they controllable in the wet?
I had a 270bhp 944Turbo and it scared the @rse off me in the rain, it was all over the show, so what 500+bhp is like I can't imagine!
Cheers for the info anyway

In the wet? hell no! thats when the scoobies come into their own!
Mines nearly 100bhp less and mine wheelspins in 3rd in the wet (4th sometimes), but when u got a car like that its hardly your daily driver, tho many are! not mine!
In mine in the dry you can leave big black lines down the road in 2nd... and if u quick with the gearchange, 3rd too. And this is on 235 width rear tyres (tho after 1st gear it doesnt seem to stop u movin, your still piling forward at speed, and if ur in 2nd gear or higher, in a rolling start nothing will touch you, apart from even faster cossies (or a mclaren F1!).
Then again theres always somthin.....
I got around 450, some of ems got comin on for 550, so u can guess what theyre like...

Steve,
Don't know about "all you need is a clutch, diff's are ok" (from the other thread) ask Mike R how many diff's he blew, and what he had to pay for his current one !!!
As for big power Scoobs, well there are loads in the US, and AUS', and I expect it won't be long before we get some over here. Then the Cossie's really will be ANCIENT HISTORRRY
Mark.

When you really come down to it it is bonkers power from the cossie. Mine is a handfull in the wet with 260bhp from a stage one conv. so when 500+bhp gets out of control in a rwd it must chuck you over the armco!
it was a steep learning curve coming from a FWD astra to RWD turbocharged cossie, do you monster power boys have any problems when you get to around that figure or is it fundamentally the same to drive (just quicker ).

Steve,
I think you should check your figures, as you have made a few mistakes: Just to set the record straight:
Peak power of 515.4bhp is made at 7000 rpm (at which point it is making 384.5 lb.ft)
Peak torque of 421.5 lb.ft is made at 5000 rpm (at which point it is maing 400.7bhp) - makes identical torque and power at 5250...
However, between 7000 and 7500, it only loses 1.5bhp (and 25 lb.ft)...
They are a total handful if not treated with respect, but providing you treat it like a lethal weapon, then you will have no worries. Just remember to get ready with the opposite lock the second you get on the throttle...
This can be helped with a Quaife ATB (eats the planet gears of standard diffs) and wide tyres on the back.
Best regards
Mike R

Astraboy,
So far I have been well pleased with the reliability. The car gets the absolute t i t s ragged off it and has done over 15k trouble free miles (oil, filter and plugs only). Done numerous track days, top speed runs, been to the Nurburgring and back, Scotland and back (where it was put on a rolling road) and does silly speeds three or four times per tankful...
What more could you ask - has YOUR Cossie been that reliable....
LOL

the only thing Ive had go wrong in 3k and a years ownership is a set of plugs and a rocker cover gasket. and several sets of tyres

T66 turbo, hmmmmmmm... nice.
thas a new one to me, but when i was havin my engine built ages ago there was a national saloon car championchip saff there and that had a huuuuuuuuge turbo with an external wastegate on it, wud that of been it? what manifold would you use? What boost? surely 36psi or so is the max without the block distorting? whats the max boost mike!? Oh and how do you map above 2bar boost with a 3bar map sensor? (i bet ive missed the obvious with the last question).
cheers

Just had a look at the graphs from the very impressive escos above.
Can someone explain why the otrque figures of the big cossies dont match their bhp figures. Why are they trailing by about 100 units?
This isnt a pro scooby anti cosworth thing its just the high output imprezs (jap ones and hyperexs for exaple) seem to be able to maintain similar torque and power.

Adam,
It all come down to the port sizes and cam choice. As you can see my engine has over 400lb/ft torque between 3500 and 7000rpm. This makes it an extremely driveable car. Now my engine builder could change the cams in my engine and give me well over 500lb/ft but the power/torque would not happen until later on, say 5000/6000rpm. Perfect for racing on the track but cr4p on the road.
It all comes down to what you want and if your engine builder can deliver, Harvey at SCS did exactly what I asked for!!
Cheers,
Dan

Sorry for not mentioning you mate (your car is WELL worth a mention, its amazin), but was rushing when i wrote this post, as i was about to go home.
i even forgot to put my mates escort in with the same kind of wild power (once its run in!).
