40.5mpg from 2.5i 2004 Legacy saloon !!!
Mixed driving over the last 2 tank fulls (admittedly alot of that was driving up North with not too much traffic)
Compared to 16.7mpg average over 36,000 miles from the Impreza (only modded to around 250bhp)

Shirley tank size is irrelevant - you work off the quantity put in the tank between fill ups from petrol station reciepts and recording then resetting the tripometer on every fill up.
Unless you want to assume grossly inaccurate figures for the sole purpose of bragging on BBSs

Check the fuel tank size
I'm maybe too trustworthy or just too lazy to work it out, but I just go by what the computer tells me the average fuel consumption is......

Probably won't be that accurate, might be as much as 5-10% optimistic from anecdotal evidence of some trip computers. However, bound to be a lot more accurate than "senilecalc" (i.e. just assuming you've used the whole tank capacity every time you fill up)
Even allowing for a little bit of error, it's quite impressive. My impreza modded to ~280bhp has averaged just under 25mpg over 53,000 miles - so better than your impreza but still a very long way behind the legacy.
