If your car is standard, then use the oil recommended in the handbook or the cheaper, but equally effective Halfrauds alternative. If your car is modified and therefore taken outside of manufacturers' tolerances, then consider opting for the more expensive ester based oils supplied by Motul and Silkolene, which claim (with substantiation) to offer greater protection for higher stressed components.

If by first service you mean the 1k, then a good semi-synth will aid in the continued running-in of the engine. From 10k on I'd switch to a quality fully synth such as Silkolene, Millers or Motul. On a tight new engine anything above a 10W will be too thick IMHO, as will 50+. I'd look at a 5W40, and switch up to 10W50/60, or 15W50/60 when it's either worn well in or you have performed substantial mods which require lubrication with higher heat tolerances.
