You and me both mate it really sucks

I'd like to be able to give you some good news but from the conversations I've had your choices seem to be, a really big bill or an even bigger bill, unlucky

Yeah that sounds about right if you just get the head gaskets done, chances are you'll need a couple of other bits doing while you're at it depending on the mileage, clutch & flywheel for instance, it soon adds up

Sounds like a good price, it'd be worth considering changing the clutch at the same time really.

Is this the car that you bought from your friend at work who had it serviced recently (as he told you)...???

Or is this a different car you bought to the one you originaly enquired about on SN.

Any idea that the head gaskets blow at 70,000miles is the usual ill informed, half-baked, ScoobyNet statement

If the previous owner knew about the fault then a visit may be in order - he/she may offer to pay half the bill? It's worth a try ......

Good luck!

I think not; belts and oil change would set you back about £300 on their own.

Actually that's about £900, isn't it?

Is it actually a tough job replacing the head gaskets?????

I would have thought time was the only thing which was needed - and thats free if you DIY (of course, a few parts too) ..... but surely it's not that difficult, is it???

An engine in job or engine out?

Personally, I would think that due to the space constraints (sp) in the engine bay, that it would be an engine out job. That would bump the pirce up a fair bit.

As said, it needs doing with the engine out, labour is the largest portion of
the overall cost.

Whilst it's out though you could also get the clutch and flywheel checked, it
would be a shame for it to go and then the engine needs removing again.

Engine out every time for a quality job. £700 + VAT here for both heads. To try and do it in the car is silly, as by the time you have unbolted everything necessary to get the heads off, there are only about 4 more bolts holding the engine in.

DO NOT skim Impreza heads ever - bad idea. If they need a clean up then maybe 2 - 3 thou but no more. We use a big flat sheet of 1/2 inch steel with fine emery on and literally ' iron ' the heads flat. Works perfectly and takes off the minimum of metal to achieve a flat surface.

With the engine out it's easy to check the clutch and I'd bet a whole pile of money you'll need one and a skim on the flywheel too.

Check the rad for silt too as it will be silly to repair the gaskets and find they go again in a months time......

Good luck - David APi Impreza / APi Engines
