A very real threat last week had a call from bank to say we had fraudlent activity on the account via a chip and pin card (Not from internet) but details obtain from a shop outlet still undergoing investigation. Will get the money back (£500) but in 10 days or so.

There are banks that are close to using chip's only, but the card reader has to still have the ability to read the swipe part, incase the other part fails.

Had the same done to my wifes account and she filled up at a Tesco petrol station, the worker behind the counter was scanning the card, £600 drawn out from Holland in mid April still waiting for the money

I once worked in a shop... someone came and bought shedloads of CDR's with a stolen C.Card... transpired the innocent owner had only used it in literally one place, a petrol station. Two dodgy assisants were apparently taking a swipe under the counter for their own use, but what's the answer, to make sure your card doesn't go out of your sight for one second? Can these a-holes do anything with just the card information, as I noted that the receipt they give you doesn't have the full number on it, but the copy that they keep does?

I'm paranoid now when assistants inexplicably "make a mistake" and then reams of the paper come out of the machine and they then do the transaction again, but properly. Could be genuine error, but they tend to want to keep some of that paperwork for the till etc. Hmm...

It was so obvious this was going to happen.. Chip & Pin was a waste of time and money..

They should have gone for another system that was trialed that used a digital tablet to record "how" you sign, even if someone copies your signature they will never do it exactly how you do it..

Problem was it was expensive to develop and roll out.

My card was cloned a few years back in our local Shell garage, some git, was swiping it under the counter, I hads just come out of hospital, and a guy turns up on my doorstep with £2500 worth of car HiFI equimpment I thought one my boys had borrowed my card until I phoned him at work, so I phoned the shop where it all came from turns out they knew my date of birth and everything, What really peed me off the guy who ordered the stuff left 2 phone numbers, a landline number which was dead, and a mobile, when I rang it he answered it, the police came and took all my details, but I never heard the out come, but our shell garage was closed for a few days and when I returned all new staff had been put in.

Went to a Shell garage yesterday and it was back to the old signature system.

What a complete farce this chip and pin system is!

Talking of cloned cards, my credit card was cloned after a member of staff at Halifax left a form I had filled in with my credit card details un-attended and someone stole it.. They spent over £8,000 on my card before it was flagged up and blocked.

lucky I only use atm machines its much easier than having to watch your card all the time and walking out of a shop or petrol station thinking have them ****ers cloned my card. If halifax did that to me I wouldnt bank with them still I've worked for 2 banks so far but now run my own business. I could of took peoples bank and credit card details for my own use I guess some people are not trustworthy. You wouldnt think such a small piece of plastic could cause so much ****.

It wasnt the fault of halifax, just the silly bint on the reception desk.

They did refund me the moment it was clear what had happened. No charges for interest or anything lke that.. And they were very appologetic.

Spoke to my local Shell guy today -

They're still using the old style signature, apparently, it's over 2 million pounds worth of fraud, from Shell alone!!!!!!!!!
