Default More fuel for nothing

I watched 5th Gear over the weekend where it stated that if you want upto about 60p more fuel on a full tank just fill up when its cold e.g. in the night and the drop in temperature causes the fuel to increase volume (more dense) than say in the heat of the day when at 20+'c Over a year you'll probably end up getting a full tank for nothing (compared to filling in the day) .... anyway

Thumbs down

I think 5th Gear forgot that fuel is generally stored in underground tanks which will stay at a pretty constant temperature day/night HOWEVER if you bought all your fuel in the winter - that's another story!!!!!!!!!!!

Depends if the fuel is metered by mass or volume. If mass then temp won't make any difference. If volume, which is more likely, then it will.

But the fuel is stored in a big tank buried in the ground so even if the ambient air temp is 20 degC higher then the fuel that is being metered is unlikely to be more than a degree or so hotter. Good try though.

You also lose an amount if the fuel is produced nearby ( so arrives 'warm' )

There were small but measurable losses when I used to admin a petrol station for a large retailer not far from the depot at immingham...
