Cracked windscreen
Bugger
Just went out to wash the car, ready for the RB relay tomorrow and after washing and rinsing the car, suddenly spotted a crack running from the top to the bottom of my windscreen..cant believe the bad luck of it.
I have a sun strip across the top as well (which may hold it all together )
AUTOGLASS are able to fit a new one with sun strip on sunday.
Only problem is, i am going on the RB relay run tomorrow and was just wondering if it is safe to drive with it cracked.

really that much??
one of my friends said i should just kick it out like they do in the movies and drive around with a crash helmet on... nutter
autoglass..i have to pay £60 excess (with directline) but they are chucking in the sunstrip for free.
understand about the impact of a crash (no pun intended) but normal motorway driving ok??

BE very careful with your new screen! Phone them and make sure it is a genuine replacement! You will NOT get a visible VIN number cut out on a replacement screen unless it is the genuine screen.
TRust me, i have got no visible VIN having visited autoglass earlier in the year.
Phone them and insist upon it.

Won't be a problem, you've only cracked the top layer of glass, you have a layer of laminate & a second glass layer to hold it together
I've fitted both with and without VIN notches on Scoob's before it's nothing to do with being a genuine screen, just a different manufacturer. We don't fit Subaru badged screen due to the silly cost.

But i am pissed off that i can no longer see a visible VIN number that is there by design, and i was fobbed off and not told about this before the screen was fitted. I take my car to be reapired, i expect it to be the same as it was before the accident.
Having my VIN covered means it is NOT correctly made for my car and i was pissed off about it.
I dont care about your costs, i pay my insurance, and they pay you, end of.

Don't blame you & I have no idea why some screens come without the VIN notch. Possibly the position of the VIN plate changed on different MY's, but even then there is usually a revision on the screen to refelct this. I've missed it myself before & fitted the wrong one. The only other car I can think of where this happends is the MK5 Escort where they all have the notch & you just blank it out if necessary...
No help I'm afraid.

many thanks mate, only took 11 replies to get to the right one
you are right, it has only done the top glass, checked with autoglass and they said if you cant feel the crack on the inside, then i am ok.
re the vin number, my car is a classic so hence no cutout for the vin number, so that was not relevant
cheers once again, am now set for the relay tomorrow , cracked windscreen and all

Cracked windscreen repaired...all sorted
Guy from autoglass did it on sunday, did the whole job and drying time in around 2 hours and a great job.
he only busted 2 clips getting the glass out, ordered some new ones and they will be fitted tomorrow.
Chucked in the glass with free sunstrip tint so not bad for £60.
Lovely to look out through a clear, unchipped window
(goes away to touch some wood )

sorry dave, should have qualified that better.
it is the glass that has that built in graduated tint at the top..
Not quite sure if it is standard, just that my last windscreen didnt have it, so i was guessing it was an extra option when ordering?? could be wrong.
bet you were thinking " hang on didnt see that memo about autoglass doing free tinting"
