Default Sti Spoiler...

Ok does it actually do anything aerodynamically or is it just an over the top chav accessory? I do get annoyed at times that the damn thing is some times in my eyeline in the rear view mirror and obscures the road behind at distance...with the wrx having a smaller (nicer in my view) spoiler does the STI really need one like this?

Dont know mate. I've just bought a prodrive spoiler for my WRX, then closed the garage door on it and scratched all the paint off I dont like the STI spoiler much either but it is good for the missus to do the ironing on.

I think it does do its job of pushing down the back of the car. The reason I say that is because I was at Elvington at a RWYB and one of the scoob drivers was trying to get his high level spoiler swapped for a WRX (ironing board) one in order to allow him to go a little quicker. The down side of such a swap is that when your car gets to the higher speeds you may have trouble keeping the wheels on the ground to allow you to control the car properly!

Im presuming its 100mph+ surely before this sort of assistance from the spoiler makes any noticeably affect? vs the wrx spoiler?

So pretty much if this is the case its a track day accessory more than a needed road car one..unless you are doing 120+ on maj's roads of course

I was under the impression the wing comes into effect at 73mph and over.

It is however no chav accessory

It must produce more downforce over the wrx one, but at what limit i don't know. I happen to like it, even if it does nothing more than flap around in the wind.

I wouldn't of thought it was such a high speed. Must be less. At those speeds it will be causing more drag than df ? But then again, i'm no techie, just my opinion.

And it's not a chav accessory. It comes with the car. Why is everything "chav/ned" all of a sudden. I don't know any "kids" with an STi or a WRX for that matter.

It flexes around at high speeds, you can see the thing wobbling it's like jelly. I very much doubt it gives any downforce at all.

It would probably slow an STi down because of drag, hence the reason why that other STi driver wanted to swap.

I think everyone's fed up the 'c' word on here as there have been 328 threads (exactly) debating whether our cars are 'chav' cars or not and everyones paranoid.

I'm getting my spoiler finished in Burberry check - Ennit.

I remember an old Top Gear with Clarkson reviewing the old Escort Cossie. He said that the rear wing on that caused so much drag it lowered the top speed by 10mph*

*from memory, exact figures may have been different.

It must be doing something. Look at that tiny rear lip Audi put on the back of the TT to make it more stable?!

Well they put a wing of similar effect on the rally cars, they rarely top 110 and so its effectivness must be before this threshhold

When I was looking at STI's before I bought one, a Subaru salesman told me that the police had bought a couple and asked for the spoilers to be removed. They had supposedly had to have them retro-fitted as the cars were unstable at high speeds. Whether there is any truth in this, I don't know...

in my opinion the low spoiler is better and at least you can see out of the window but everone to their own!
