Default Help! rich gasoline smell!!!

hi all,

need some help on a WRX MY02

when idle with the engine running im getting a rich gasoline/exhaust fume smell coming into the cabin!!!

happens all the time when car is left idle i.e parked up or stopping at the lights. it is ok when im driving.

so i assume that when driving fresh air is getting through the pipe which feeds my vents in the cabin.

question, is this a common thing ? and where is the air filter for the ventillation? pictures will help, or detailed directions.

thanks.

Nothing to worry about M8 i've got a MY 2003 STi PPP and it does exactly the same thing when it's cold, and shows up even more so when the weathers cold, it's simply the engine running very rich until it warms itself up.

My MY01 does it now and again.

Not done it for a while now though.

Do a search on here under petrol smell.

Ted.

Might be worth gettin the breather hose checked then M8, mine don't really show up so much this time of year, much worse on cold frosty weather.

My MY01 BUGEYE has smelt strongly of petrol in the start up phase, most typically on cold damp days - but has not been anywhere near so bad or frequent since end of Feb 06 when I had the 60,000 mile service done which maybe crucially included replace/fit new fuel filter.

There is a Subaru official bulletin issued to dealers garages about 'petrol smells from cold start' relating to MY02 cars - which some kind soul attached to a thread a while back - do a search on "petrol smell". The work involves changing lengths of petrol pipe and repositioning fixings/unions but I'm told other parts have to be removed within the engine bay to access the work area. I was quoted circa £250 to have the work done as it takes some time. Decided if it returns, I will live with it and put money towards something else.

Hi there. I have known of some bugeye scoobs to leak exhaust fumes at the back of the turbo. If this is the case you just need to replace the gasket between the turbo and the CAT downpipe. Takes an hour or so.

I had this problem on one of my Evo's i had.........turned out to be nothing more than a weep through the fuel tank drainplug, a quick tighten up and problem solved!!

I 100% agree on the leaking gasket, when I had my new exhaust fitted they didnt fit one between the turbo and manifold down pipe and I kept getting the smell!

But once I had a gasket fitted it's gone

just taken the car down to local subaru and it turns out to be a fault with one of the injector seals when driving the car causing high pressure its spurting out petrol onto the engine apparently highly dangerous and could catch fire and explode any any time!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (although i have driven it with this problem for over 5k miles.

anyway, has anyone had this problem??? and how much will it roughly cost? knowing the seal is quite cheap, its the labout im worried about....
