I would go for a wrx rather than an STI but as flat-4-ire said running the car will cost you its not the most fuel efficent(obviously you not buying to be drive like miss daisy)if you're handy with a spanner then you could do some of the work yourself.

the running costs don't really bother me, it will be a weekend only car and therefor will appreciate it more, i have another vehicle to use during the week

The flip side is that you are more likely to find a better example Uk car cos the jdms seem to (obviously) hold better money.

What I would say is don't buy the first car you see, go and have a good look around and see exactly what £4k will buy...

Hi,

I have a Uk, genuine car for sale, very good condition, enthusiast owned for £3500. I have driven imports before and they don't feel anymore powerful. 0-60 is around the same.
Personally I would want a full service history on these cars which you don't get usually on an import. Also I saw a lot of imports when looking for mine and they were usually worst for wear.
Have a look on the link below, if your interested, PM or email me

^^^^That is the car I'd buy if I only had 4k to spend.

Wouldn't feel happy buying a cheap STI and I certainly wouldn't buy a classic WRX over a UK turbo.

Well theres not far off a second between a jap and uk model and nearly 50bhp so there is a big difference not to meantion the spec. Electrically folding mirrors etc etc

Lack of service history is the main draw back on imports.

I agree, if you go to a reliable import you know you will get quality though
