Zafira on sale in Japan as Subaru Traviq
#1
Based on the Opel / Vauxhall Zafira compact van, The Subaru Traviq went on sale in Japan in August/ General Motors and Fuji Heavy Industries, who manufacture Subaru vehicles, expect initial sales of up to 12,000 units a year. The Zafira is now available on five continents as an Opel, Vauxhall, Chevrolet, Holden and Subaru.
In Japan, the compact van is powered by the same 108kW (147hp) 2.2 litre ECOTEC gasoline engine used in the Zafira 2.2. It has a distinctive appearance and a modified suspension to suit local customer preferences. The compact vans for Japan are being built at the new GM plant in Rayong, Thailand. This plant went on stream in May 2000. It operates according to the stringent quality standards that apply throughout the Opel Production System. A large proportion of the components are supplied from Opel's Bochum facility in Germany, which is the Zafira home plant. The Subaru Traviq is one of the results of the strategic alliance concluded in December 1999 between General Motors and Fuji Heavy Industries with the aim of co-operating on vehicle development, production and marketing.
