why do I think that.....

I am not using it as a derogatory term, one of my good mates Mad Scientist has had an Imprezza since being a nipper at about 22 and you would never class him as a boy-racer or skally, but when I drive through Manchester now and I see alot of blinged up chavs driving them....... well thats why I have the thoughts.....
suppose its time to the miniscule price now of picking up a banger.....
PS Dean, do people refer to you as Deano????

Well there is a certain amount of logic to it - if you have a love of fast cars and are 17 you have a somewhat limited selection to chose from so it tends to be a reasonably nippy hatchback. But that doesn't necessarily make them a boy racer.
I had an Astra GTE when I was 18, then a 2.2 V-Tec Prelude at 19. Now I'm 27 and have a v4 STi, but I wouldn't say I was ever a boy racer. That term applies as much to your attitude as to the car you drive.

well, only to an extent, but once the few chav's get hold of 'em... it tarnishes the masses and what was once a recognised "I want one" car becomes a "I would rather have something else" car.... never had that problem with my Alfa GTV V6

The Impreza is certainly becoming more chavvy - that's been discussed in many threads on here recently, I suppose it's just because they have become so accessible these days. That are they are so easy to tune / mod, unlike many other fast cars.
Chavs probably don't go for the Alfa as they don't want a car that spends more time in the garage than on the road

because alot of people who drive a performance car in there 20's will have had a performance car before???
Just remember the older guys who used to have MK1 escorts, capris and MK1 Golf Gtis were the boy racers of their generation just like the Saxo\Nova\SRi guys are now in their hot hatches.
The chav bling bull**** makes me laugh.. and if you dont have a Impreza why do you even care?
Just enoy your 'elite among hairdressers' GTV pose status (nice looking car btw, shame they fall apart and the dealers are WORSE than subaru... my brother (a hairdresser no less) had 3 years of hell with one :P)
"I'll take the Alfa out george, cant be seen in a brutish thug car like that Impreza beast"
Plus I SHALL RACE THEE ON THE ROAD IN MY CHAV MOBILE IF OUR PATHS CROSS!!!

Im 23 and have had a scooby when I was 19 and now on my 2nd scooby.
It seems to me what ever car you have, your going to get labeled with something, and every car I have had ive been called something.
Had a Audi TT and was called a hairdressing ponce, had a Jeep Cherokee and everyone said that it must be my dads car, had a scooby and Im labeled a boy racer and when I had a 106 GTi Ive been called a boy-racer CHAV.
Is there any car that I wont get called names in.

Look at it from another angle. I've driven all manor of hot hatch from XR2s right up to Pulsar GTiRs. Evo's to Scoobs to Scooby STI's. People look and think great and others think T0sser. I really couldn't give a hoot as I didn't buy it for either reaction just my own. Cars of this ilk are purchased by emotive people who don't want to settle for bog standard cars. Simple
I'm more worried what will these people say when they see me in my Skoda!!

I couldn't afford the insurance on anything with any real performance, before my subaru.
When I was 17 I had a '79 1.2 mitsi colt, which never went wrong, all I had to buy for it was oil/filter, brake pads, tyres, and a fuel filter. This is when I started preferring jap cars simply due to their build quality and reliability.
Before I owned another jap car I owned a ford siera, an xr2, and a peugeot 405.
Best of the bunch was the xr2, as it was like a mechano set, very easy & cheap to work on/maintain, and a bit of fun to drive. The peugeot was an all round awful car, overcomplicated. I do not like french cars at all as a result.
Two pajero's later and I have the scoob, which is so far the best car I have owned for performance, build quality, & reliability, regardless of the exclusive SNET image.

I dont think this thread inteded to label anyone, anyone who bought their own car at 17 would have had a pile of junk. Personally I couldn't afford a nova sr otherwise I probably would have had one of those (AX was way faster anyway )
No need to feel labeled of embarrased by what you first owned
