Im about to buy a 99 UK Model Impreza Turbo.......

You can use ordinary unleaded if it hasn't had any modifications.

You will get better fuel consumption on Optimax which will more than likely outweigh the extra cost per tank, assuming this is a question relating to the financial side of things

Even if unmodified i would absolutely not put normal unleaded in, super unleaded at the very least but preferably Optimax

Depends who you believe, Anecdotal tales on Scoobynet or detailed scientific studies that rebuff most of the claims about the difference that 2-3 Octane numbers make.

95RON is ok. As long as it's not modded and does not have a PPP. Fuel consumption is virtually identical.

The car, by law, came designed to run happily on 95ron. So if no mods it is fine. SUL may give a feel of better pick up but it won't translate to more than a couple of tenths in terms of real speed. The MPG increase won't nearly be enough to run SUL particularly Optimax.

My car certainly leaves me better off when i use SUL.

I posted this 4 years ago on this very subject

A few weeks ago there was a debate with regards to SUL and will there be a mpg improvement. I have used it for the last 7 tanks.
On normal unleaded i was averaging about 18.8mpg. After allowing 3 tanks for the ecu to reset itself i am now averging 20.8 mpg. By my thinking thats an improvement of 2 mpg.
So if i fill with: unleaded. 13.2 gallons at £3.40 = £44.88
: SUL . 13.2 gallons at £3.59 = £47.39
It costs £2.51 extra for the SUL. But if i'm getting 2 mpg gallon more then 2 x 13.2 (gallons)=26.4 extra miles per tank of SUL which is a gain of about 1.27 gallons.
So 1.27 gallons of normal unleaded is £4.32 Take off the extra which SUL costs per tank (£2.51) and i have a gain of £1.81 per tank.

Was this law changed on the MY00 models then? As when I opened my petrol cover, there is a sticker which clearly states it must be run on super underleaded?

Does it also say Gasoline? We run on petroleum 'ere Read the manual...it's more specific.

Anyhoo back to back test over 2 months on the same dreary slog to work and back: 95ron 24mpg, Optimax 24mpg
