Default UK Turbo 2000?

Hi,

Recently i have been toying with the idea of purchasing one of these cars. In about 2-3 months or so. Took a quick look on AT and figured out for around 5-7k i could get one with around 65-75k on the clock.

My question is... Is this to much for a 2.0l turbo car? and will it be unreliable?

Thanks, Matt

I bought my 2ltr turbo about two months ago, and I have to say its bloody brill, definitely worth every penny. Cost £4,000 and had 55,000 on the clock. Obviously can't comment on reliability because I haven't had it that long but I have done quite a few long journeys and all seems fine.

Everyday I look forward to driving end even filling it with petrol!
Go for it mate!

A few pointers mate:-

1. Avoid anything modified (bar a backbox)

2. If it's got a CockLink, Boost Gauge or other gauges you are dealing with a Rally Wannabee and someone who will be thrashing their car daily - AVOID!

3. Avoid all Imports, EU or Jap. OR get a massive discount

4. Buy a 1 Owner UK car

5. Buy from an Owner/Driver who is aged more than 30 years old

6. Do NOT, repeat, do NOT buy a 'Bargain' (there are no bargains in Car Sales!)

7. Look for FULL Service History - Subaru for the first 5 years - independent after that

8. Do not hurry your purchase ..... top Classics are around but are few and far between now (certainly for £5k)

9. HPI it and walk away from ANYTHING that your gut tells you is wrong

10. Buy right and enjoy years of trouble free motoring

Pete

ps. Best buy a 99 or 00 MY!!

At that price, you took their trousers down and subjected them to cruel and unusual punishment!! Assuming its a MY 99/00 a FSH, and no faults, that car should have gone for 6.5 easily- more like 7 given the good mileage.

Nice one!!

What is the problem with buying an import

They've got more power and better spec

Just watch out on autotrader...I'm looking to sell soon. And some of the prices are far too over priced compared to both Glasses and Parkers - even with mileage correction.

For £5-7K you should get quite happily get a post MY97onwards ukturbo with 42K and FSH

Which will include mine when I put the thing up for sale.

But I'm not avertising yet as I have unfortunate, complicated personal commitments tieing me up at the moment and I need to shift the junk out the boot and give some spit and polish before advertising it.

Who on earth is going to buy a depressed Subaru, detested by its owner since new?

I'm giving it a chance to have a happier life.

At least I had the decency not to allow the Gorillas at Subaru who used the intercooler as a coffee/tool tray to lay a greasy finger on it ever again

Admittedly there aren't many JDM imports with any service history from Japan out there. One reason why I gave up looking at them (many moons ago when I actually WANTED a Subaru )

some good and poor advice there. using your pointers pete,

1. reputable mods can save you a fortune if the mods match future plans for the car, why pay top dollar when someone has done it for you. i think pete is meaning avoid over modded tacky stuff.

2. knocklinks and boost gauges are for monitoring the car and i can't think why it would make someone drive faster. actually may show the owner having more care for the car than one without.

3. don't know enough to comment TBH, but there are some cracking spec cars that come in. i for one am dubious of any exceedingly low mileage on an old car though.

4. can't think why you'd need to do this, if it's got 4 or 5 owners then find out why. but even then, it's a car to be shared and alot of people get bored quickly.

5. again odd. plenty of young owners who treat their cars as well as an older owner.

6. very true.

7. or even better full subaru history up to date, if it's independant try to get feedback on the garage.

8. like pete says, it is a buyers market. there's good 99 turbos out there for 5k aswell.

9. very good advice, as easy as it is to have rose tinted glasses when buying, if you're unsure get an inspection done.

10. yup. had mine 6 years now and it's as good as ever

One thing that might be worth mentioning is that you ought also to budget for spending some money on the cars after you buy them, i don't mean mods but in terms of having a few quid in the bank for repairs, new tyres etc. Despite what the press might say you really can't keep one for the same money as a Ford Focus.

There are still some good MY99 or 00 cars about and there is no reason why you can't find one but it will take a while and the advice Pete gives is fairly sound. However, i wouldn't recommend spending all your budget on a car without having a reasonable sum left over for running costs.

By heckers, cancel the SETI programme, we've had an alien transmission right here on SN.

Hello there alien creature. Your language is new to us but you have contacted earth. Earth beings say welcome. Our scientists say your language patterns show evidence of a simple intelligence and wish to know how something so simple can travel interstellar distances. Did you do it using the new lightspeed dump to atmosphere BOV? We know such devices are available to the terminally simple but have never constructed one here on earth because of the possibility of it creating a chav-hole in space-time.

Our leaders suspect that your spacecraft probably contravenes a range of our earth laws, especially in relation to exhaust diameter, and so they wish you to bog off back whence you came. If you came with any friends in what us earth beings call "Novas" could you take them along with you please. Should you pass any planets supporting advanced civilizations don't hesitate to point them in our direction.

Thank you for your cooperation. Have a nice day.

Big Ends about to drop out??

Ignore the Numpties on here that spout crap about the Boxer Engine being made of chocolate .... it's turned into chocolate by half-baked Cadburys Modifications!!

As long as it has no mods. and has seen regular oil changes and has been driven sensibly then it will be good for many more years.

General condition is the main driving force at £3.5k ....

At that price you can tell a dog from 10 miles away - it will have a CockLink on the dash and a Rally Wannabbeee Owner

Pete

ps. £3500 - £4000 is too much for a 95 IMHO .... especially at 100,000+ miles!

Well, lets look at the facts shall we??

1. It's WHITE

2. 120,000 miles on the clock

3. 1995 Impreza

4. 2000 or 1999 Imprezas with 60,000miles can be had for £6,000 easy

It just seems way over the top price wise to me .......

Pete
