Car was running on the lowest tank of petrol ever last night (and doing great bunny hops on the straights never mind left turns!) and when I filled her up I squeezed in 58.9 litres into the 60 litre tank.

My best record before this was 58.1

Did the same in my legacy (spluttering onto forecourt) and managed to put 62 litres in!!!! Questioned it with garage (pointless exercise they were hardly likely to tell me they were ripping me off)

Thumbs up

Nice one ... I've never dared let mine get very low 'cos someone told me that modern cars require at least 4-5 gallons in the tank in order to prime them & start if you let them run dry ... could be complete b*ll*cks but don't fancy taking the chance ...

Ran my MY99 'scoob' right down the other day. Fuel light came on, and I still managed to drive 7 miles with no problems. (Reason behind this was to see how much I got from £20 of RON 95 at 76.9p a litre ...... 151.2 miles ..... not bad I thought)

Probably dragged so much sh*t into the system from the tank, that I'll regret it later.

Heheh - good thread this

I only ever seem to manage about 55/56 litres.

Am I not trying hard enough?

Talking

From the point when the fuel light comes on, in normal driving conditions I get another 50 miles out of the Legacy. Remember years ago my dad saying how wasteful it was to carry around all that extra weight in the car and never use it, now I think about it he could have been referring to me, I had always assumed he was talking about the petrol. Maybe there's a competition here, Russian roulette with the petrol light. How far can you get once the light comes on?

I only fill 1/2 way unless i'm going a long journey,this probably
chops a 1/4 second off my 0-60 time,(power to weight ratio and all
that).

However,i suppose if i was taking that seriously i should lose some
beef around my waistline and empty the sweet papers out the ashtray
more often!

brickboy - 5 gallons is a half a tank!!!

I've never had problems running mine low be down to 3 litres before - painful filling it up again though, 77 litres. Ouch.

I wrecked the engine on my old 205 gti by runing out of petrol and sucking the **** thru so beware.

Its great fun though, taking it to the wire especially if you 're miles from home in a remote area.

Zoog,

I'm sorry but "Its great fun though, taking it to the wire especially if you 're miles from home in a remote area" You need to get some new interests

Get a 1 gallon refil spare thingy, run the tank empty (& hope no cr4p gets in) and then put the spare petrol in - should be enough to get you to the nearest station.
