I've just trimmed my number plate down thinking that it was perfectly fine as long as the lettering and gaps were legal, ah well just wait to see if i get police interest or not???

wouldnt advise that being the law abiding member of the public who has never ever broken the law in his life.

also, if its a private plate, they do have the power to siez the plate off you

so long as the font and size is correct, the only other thing governing the plate id the amount of backround that surrounds the lettering or didgits.

if its got a reflective backround and its in tolerance to the 90 degreelaw that says it needs to be verticle, than its fine, but i dont think its entierly legal on and impreza model to date that has a space on the bonnet to get the right angle

personly, stick on plates look crap mate, but its your car, i think it says " look at me, pull me and check my car for faults" as well

i like the smaller plates, but, they also cry out "pull me"

so for that reason, i dont hve one, plus i dont want my reg mark taking off me

had an illegal sized "motorbike" plate on the front of my old rs turbo. it was less than half the size of a standard plate. was only about 20 at the time so thought that it was cool.

anyway i got pulled over and when i said "what for my front plate" the copper turned round and said "oh yes thanks, that's not why we pulled you over though, you have a brake light out."

she hadn't even taken any notice of it. wish i'd have kept schtum now. it cost me a tenner to get the car checked over at the local mot station and a bit of time taking all the paperwork to the local nick. was lucky though, i was told that i could have been given 3 points if they wanted to be picky about it.

Got done just three weeks ago for a small front number plate.Got pulled on the motorway at 65mph and given a vechicle defect notice although i believe you can also get a £30 fixed penalty.

if its illegal to have a small plate, strange how cars can pass a M.O.T. very odd. but not complaining. prefer the look of the smaller reg plates on all models of scoobys. personel opinion

Have a look at:
http://www.dvla.gov.uk/vehicles/regm...quirements.htm

The site doesn't mention that the plate has to be any specific size, it simply states the size of letters and spacing / borders.

If you have a short number I can't see anything saying that you can't have a shorter plate.

Just got myself a £30 fine on the way back from Andy F's for a small front plate:

So have refitted the standard square plate offset over the front fog light cover like the Evo. Doesn't look too bad really.

Bugger, looking at these pics I think my front plate might be illegal - only picked the car up a couple of weeks ago so (maybe naively) figured as the last guy was running it like that it was ok... Any opinions?

I had a £30 fine for mine aswell:

Made the mistake of having a border on an already small plate making the letters VERY small. But have got a new one on it's way which is slightly bigger.

as said before, its got nothing to do with the size of the plate, its the size of the lettering, font and spacing that counts
