help!!!!...Smell Burning oil...or summut!
...this is really getting up my nostrils, literally...
some might remember that I posted something about a funny smell coming through what I assumed my air vents inside My99 |Classic Turbo, well this is not the case anymore, Ive now realised the smell only comes when my windows down, it stinks, or as my 2yr old says "pooo tink"..
I have no pollen filter, Ive changed my air filter, still stinks, My mate was behind me in his car when we were having a rip through the country side and he says he could even smell it in his car, so must be strong when Im putting my foot down. When my windows are done up, there aint a smell, maybe a tiny bit for a minute or so then clears, soon as the window comes down, thats it "pooo tink"
Its doing my head in proper, I have no oil leaks, not loosing massive amounts, just the odd top up now n then but nothing major!!
SOmeone mentioned that I might have an Exhaust leak, but I cant say I have as I have no Blowing....
Can anyone shed any light???
Im having my oil changed on saturday, will that or could that be problem (aint been changed in 5000mls...
come on guys, im sure the experts are waiting to dish out their kind opinions.....

i'm no mechanic but had i similar problem with uk98 classic but the smell was not has bad.wasn't losing to much oil but it was a leaking rocker cover gasket and leaking crank case seal.Smell now gone.
Was told it was a common problem with classic's

The Subaru flat four engine has a common fault, caused by the layout of the engine.
The heads are very close to the exhaust manifolds on the underside of the engine, the heat from the manifolds cause the rocker cover gaskets to become worn. The gaskets then leak oil slowly on to the exhaust manifolds, and burns off causing the burning oil smell.
I believe the drivers side rocker gasket is affected most, so have a look at the exhaust manifold adjacent to the offside head, and you should find a dirty oily patch on it. If so then you know what your problem is. Also, if you look carefully under the bonnet when the engine is hot, after a run, you should be able to see smoke rising from the manifold as the oil is burning off.
Regards,
Robin.

my MY99 classis had the same symptons it turned out it was the crank oil seal weeping hardly using any oil at all but all the oil drips on the exhaust ans smells as you little one says "pooo tink"..
Cost a bloody fortune to sort out though as you have to take all the timing belts etc to get to it so I hope it is your rocker gasket

Just hope it is the rocker rather than the crank seal

i had my front crank seal replaced by a very good independant.
£5 for the seal
and it cost £92 all in to do it, oh and that included a new alternator drive belt as well

Maybe someone who doesnt like you has placed a fish on your engine to slowly rot... Or failing that I'd go for the rocker cover gasket theory too.
