esure and First Alternative call for under-21 ban on 'irresponsible' car magazines
(24 February 2005)
Online car insurers, esure and First Alternative, are this week calling on MPs to help bring about a ban on the sale of car magazines that the companies believe are 'irresponsible' to under-21-year olds.
Two main examples, Max Power and Fast Car Magazine, combine soft pornography with advice on modified - and modifying - cars, often to change the bodywork or increase engine power, both of which could have adverse effects on both the insurance costs and safety of cars.
Max Power's is now one of the UK's largest-selling car magazines and its motto is: "The Definitive Guide to Arsing Around in Cars". It has a recorded profile of readers which shows that 37% are aged between 15 and 19, with 66% under the age of 25. Nearly a quarter of the magazine's readers also spend less than £3,000 on their cars, but clearly buy the magazine with a view to changing their car's performance or look.
In the UK, drivers under the age of 21 are responsible for 20% of all motoring offences, with 88% being committed by young men. Young males are also responsible for a disproportionately high percentage of insurance claims and accidents; they also have the most serious and costly accidents on average*.
esure and First Alternative are also concerned that the high representation of uninsured drivers among this age group** could be exacerbated by drivers being encouraged to spend limited money on modifications that will inevitably make insurance far more costly and harder to find.
Mike Pickard, Head of Risk and Underwriting, at esure said: "It is disturbing that these magazines are promoting many of the things that are probably least advisable for this section of the driving population. Young men who modify cars in attempts to make them go faster are often increasing the potential risk to themselves, their passengers and other road users.
Gary Thomas, Head of Underwriting at First Alternative said: "We believe strongly that cars can always be potential lethal weapons and must be seen as such by all drivers - but particularly those most likely to have accidents: nowhere is this more true than among young men. At a time when the Government is focusing increasingly on motoring issues and road safety, we think there should be an age limit on magazines that actively promote behaviour that we believe is irresponsible."
esure and First Alternative are writing to all MPs who have shown a prior interest in motoring or road traffic accident related matters through their support of Early Day Motions and Bills to call for their support in introducing an age requirement for buying publications such as Max Power and Fast Car.

The worst thing about this is that Max Power appear to be making concessions to satisfy people who complain about it. Admitedly I picked up a copy to read in WHSmith over earlier in the week (I just wanted to see some *****, honest!)
However, I was quite taken with the change in the content. Sure, there were still the bevy of topless babes (phew) and dudes in their chaved up Corsas, but there was no cruise guide (how will I get by without knowing whether Sharon, 19, from Basildon spits or swallows .........oh hang on a minute, she's an Essex girl, I know which! Also, there were common sense arguments for speeding policy, i.e. that sometimes 20mph can be too much (when you're going through a drive through ordering your Big Mac, perhaps? ) and a guide to not ending up an accident statistic, with tips on *gasps* safe driving (that means driving with a least one hand on the wheel for the Nova boi crowd )
Ok, I don't really like Max Power (apart from the bewbies, which make any publication ) but each to their own.
I don't understand the reasoning of restricting the sale of a publication that allegedly promotes unsafe driving to any age group; if they feel that way, way not try and ban it per se!
This looks to me like more PC nonsense thinly dressed up as "Road Safety" by people with "too much time on their hands". Just cause you find something offensive, doesn't mean that a certain demographic need protecting from it.
Isn't the legal age to buy **** mags 18, in which case, what is the legal justification for puting a 21 restriction on a publication that does little more than show bewbies?
And to the editors of Max Power, if you have, er, "dumbed up?!?" your publication to appease the people who've issued this complaint, then can you please grow a pair of *********:
If you're going to be condemned, at least be condemned for what you are!!

I'd type a more lengthy response, Bubba, but I've just seen the Fit French Newsreader thread and need one hand free to unzip my jeans!

The captions on the cruise pics always mede me chortle.
I still have the one pic of some tart's foof in my head with the caption "did it wink at you too"
Back in the day with no 'tinternet, and consequently no hardcore ****, it was the closest thing to **** without the need to find a stool to reach the top shelf in the newsagents

I they should ban this irresponsible trash!
I would guess that half the 'readers' of Max Power have no insurance due to the undisclosed modifications on the Corsa's and Saxo's. These actions are given the 'nod and wink' by Max Power, because they know most of their readership could not hope to afford the insurance on the modifications that are encouraged.
And who ends up having to pay more on their insurance YOU and ME

I think they should have banned FastCar, MaxPower etc. the moment they turned into Chav enforcing grot mags... They used to be good mags for enthusiasts, now they are a load of ****.

How Bizarre!!
This is a bit like saying that girls under the age of twenty are responsible for 100% of unwanted teenage pregnancies and so all magazines such as Just 17 (featuring sexual position of the month so I am led to believe) and its sister publications (there are millions of them) should be banned for encouraging girls to, well, be girls.
I mean they even talk about having boyfriends. In fact I think we should write to all MP's on behalf of beleagured parents and the poor old NHS and wipe out female teenage miscreants on one go!!

It's pretty easy to understand Esure and First Alternatives motives, if you have ever seen Max Power then it is heavily sponsored by Adrian Flux!!!! Every article has a reference to Adrian Flux so effectively it's persuading the reader to choose thier products as opposed to other insurers!!
In this months article they phoned Adrian Flux for a quote on a Bugatti Veyron for Jeremy Clarkson, a man of his position would be paying an annual premium of £19,500 with an excess of £50,000!!!! Smile on his face PRICELESS

I still think the majority of young lads (and some women) buy it as they're not old enough to buy a proper **** magazine.
Maybe people should be asked what car magazines they read when applying for car insurance

It should be banned, in fact we could organize huge bonfires and burn books and magazines that we don’t read, or disagree with the content. We can stage rallies and do a spot of ethnic cleansing while we’re at it. Maybe Poland needs a good kicking, let’s invade them and work our way to France.

Insurance companies already make moire than enough money out of us so why are they doing this? I can only see them losing potential customers or maybe theyre hoping all the youngsters who read the likes of max power will boycott them and therefore get less drivers on which they lose money on.

To be fair, they should be booted out in advance, not after; you don't want a mess on your seats. That's why I felt the question was a good idea!
I need the numbers of the gargling girls immediately!!
*sings* Oooooooo I need a dirty woman! Only Pink Floyd fans will get that!
