I changed my V5 from GL to WRX by just crossing out the details on the form, and adding a short cover note explaining that it wasn't a GL!
I was changing address at the time, so I though I might as well change it all in one go.
Shouldn't be a problem. Might be an idea to include a phone number in the cover note in case they have any questions.

I have had the same problem with my last two cars although not imports.
DVLA advised me to provide proof that the vehicle was a WRX300 and not a WRX. I contacted the supplying dealer and they provided a letter confirming vehicle model. DVLA then re-issued the V5.
I suggest you get a dealer to provide confirmation on headed paper that the model is WRX.
