Default Wheel vibration

Ok ive just had some new 18" alloys fitted to my bugeye, now when i get upto about 70mph the steering wheels vibrates side to side not loads but a fair bit, i also noticed a fair vibration through the car to, thing is it was like this with my old wheels on, so i just thought that the old wheels needed balancing and that the steering wheel judder would have gone. P.S (That wasnt the reason for new wheels). Now when i get upto about 90mph to 100mph it seems to disapear.Any ideas anyone. Could it be the tracking?

Sounds more like the wheel balancing is out.

Thats strange then ..... if its the same vibration that was there with the old wheels then its very puzzling??

Tracking wouldn't set up a one speed vibration that you could drive through ... I would get them balanced again.

Does anyone balance ON THE CAR these days??

Have you lost any weights off the wheels?

If you are upsizing the wheels, i would have the tracking done anyway.

Might as well have the entire geometry set up properly

If they are non original subaru wheels do you got Spigot rings on the wheels?? if not then that will be the problem. (thats if they are ballenced correctly)..

ive had the same prob
toyos need 200 miles or so to bed in sometimes
but i needed mine balanceing three times untill i got it sorted
in the end it was the dealer who had balanced them on a wrong program
i would take them to a alloy wheel specialist
make sure he puts the weights as close to the front as poss!!
hope this helps

You shouldnt have to "bed in" tyres, who ever told you that needs slap and can't ballence a wheel

I still say Spigot rings are needed! Every one forgets to buy the spigot rings for their fancy tin foil aftermarket rims.

In terms of vibration, then there is definately no need to 'bed them in'. However, certain tyres do need to be 'scrubbed in' for a few hundred miles before full grip levels can be realised - my experience with Toyo T1R's are like this - absolutely terrible (grip wise) for first few hundred miles, then they seem to change all of a sudden with immense grip thereafter.

I would say this is almost certainly wheel balancing. I've had this a few times with both Bridgestone & Toyo tyres on the Subaru. Each time I had them re-balanced several times using different garages, from small local outfits to big chain garages. Each time each I would get told "they are out of balance" even though I had only cover minimal miles (just 10 miles on one occassion) between re-balancing. This suggests that the wheel balancers used by the different garages are all calibrated slightly differently.

After posting on here it was recommended that I get my wheels balanced using a 'Hunter GSP9700 Road Force Measurement® System' wheel balancer (puts a roller on the wheel and simulates the wheel being driven on the road). There are limited places using this type of balancer. This totally cured my car of any vibrations - this machine really works. It seems the Impreza (mine at least) is very sensitive to balancing. The place I used was in Birmingham - BMTR. Top people but the price is quite expensive @ £10 per wheel. Their website is www.bmtr.co.uk

Before I had my wheels balanced using the 'Hunter GSP9700 Road Force' Wheel balancer, I tried to find if anyone still does this and couldn't find a single place anywhere.

I was told (by the few places that had even heard of this) that this couldn't be done on a 4 wheel drive vehicle anyway, due to the diffs being damaged (can only balance one wheel at a time) - not sure how true this is but sounds logical.

Totally agree. I have had the same experience. It almost feels like driving on an icy road for the first few miles. I believe this is something to do with the compounds used on some performance tyres which have a form of 'residue' on them that needs 'scrubbing in'.

The balance weights can be put anywhere on the rim. When I had mine balanced using the 'Hunter GSP9700 Road Force' Wheel balancer, the fitter asked if I'd like all the balance weights (stick on) placing behind the wheel spokes. Very supprised at this comment I inquired further, and the guy explained that this balancer (not sure about others) could be programmed to compensate for different weight locations on the rims. This was then done and the result was perfection - not a vibration in sight!
