Default Focus RS to Scooby, Opinions

Have any of you Guys/Girls moved from a FRS to a WRX.

I am considering swapping over to a 06 WRX, I can't afford an STI.
I like the raw edge of the Focus and of course the speed. Its time for a new car and its 4wd thats selling it to me. All that power in a FWD is sometimes a problem.

I would like to hear any opinions you may have on the subject.

Are you looking to buy a brand new car? There are some great bargains about now with the Blob eye STi's you should be able to afford an STi. From other posters experience the STi is a much more complete package, but all dependent on what you want

Im looking for new or nearly new, Was really after a 06 car. If I could get an STI I would swap in an instant, Is the WRX a let down. I like a raw hard car, would I be disapointed with a WRX.

How much can you get a bug eye STI for.

If it's raw you're after, then it has to be the STi. With 04's going for around £16,500 you should be able to get a good one with your budget. With your money, I would take an 04 STi over, say a 05/06 WRX.

I did just that mate, last year. Had a Focus RS for 2 years and loved it. The main reason why I sold it was cos on certain roads (you know the ones I mean) the Torque steer just made overtaking too risky. Like you, I wanted 4WD, and was sick of waiting to see if Ford was going to make a 4WD Focus RS (New shape) which they haven't so I bought a STI with free PPP.
The main difference is the interior. The Focus interior is better made, looks better, and feels better (better materials). The steering weight of the Focus is a lot better too. The main gripe I have with the STI, is the stereo is just so damn awful. Distorts and isn't very loud. Handling wise. On a main A road, or even B road, the Focus has far better mechanical grip. It will corner harder (que all the Bollox posts) but put the 2 cars together on bumpy, camber ridden roads, and the Impreza is much quicker. Abviously in wet conditions the 4WD has an advantage in traction. Overtaking is now not a problem as there is no Torque steer, plus, and this is the biggest plus, as my car has PPP, it's got 300BHP, which makes it a very fast cross country car.

Styling is subjective of course, but I loved the look of the FRS, while the Impreza does have the Chav, wideboy image. I'm forever getting the thumbs up from 12 year old lads. The Focus always got compliments of the Girls. "Oh, I love your car".

Obviously, all the above is based on FRS V's Impreza STI PPP. If my choice at the time had only been FRS V's WRX only, then I would have stuck with the FRS, as it is a quicker car (even more so with blufin ). If you can stretch to a STI then it wouldn't be a bad decision.

I must admit though, I do still miss my FRS, alot. Every time I see one I kind of wish I still had mine, but hey, life goes on.

Why would you want to downgrade to a slower car?

...not to mention depreciation!

IMO gotta be a STi, if you like the raw edge that the RS has then i'd say you'd find a WRx a bit on the soft side, and not a lot faster in everyday use than your RS.
For your sort of budget you'd pick up a 04 STi maybe even with PPP (which again IMO u need on a STi to give it a bit of a edge ) I went from a CTR to a 2003 STi PPP and aint looked back, love the grip, torque and of cause the speed. Just wait till u do your first little Mod, it'll be a Strut brace or a Air filter then theres no stopping it, it just spirals out of control and takes over your life

I would like a fairly new car so I have some warrenty which is the reason I am about to chop in the Focus. I also prefer the shape of the new Scooby, They seem to have finally sorted its front end out. Im about to buy a house and have just had a little girl so I can't stretch much past the money I will get for the Focus.

What sort of cost am I looking at for 1-2 year STI?

Cheers all!

I went from cossie to an STI and even the STI is really slow in comparisson, a WRX would definitly disappoint you mate.

Sorry

An STi is well within your budget mate for 16-17k or you could buy a WRX for 12k and send it to WRC-Tech/powerstation/etc and upgrade the engine and fit some uprated suspension - much much quicker than an RS

One other thing I forgot to mention ....... Brakes
The FRS brakes are Far superior to those on the STI's. If you drive like I do, then you'll know just how powerfull the FRS brakes are. The STI's feel spongy in comparison, they lack the initial feel and bite of the FRS's, and certainly can't stop as quickly. The STI's ain't awful, don't get me wrong, they're just not as good.

Pads on the STI's are cheaper too. At £271 for the FRS's, most pads are

Default my06

We had a choice of anything on the market after trying most things on the market we chose the my06 and it's a total drivers car un like the RS the power goes where its meant to straight to the tarmac but still involves you when driving it.We prefered the wrx to the sti slightly smoother ride quality.

The 06 WRX with PPP should be fairly quick, the 2.5 engine will have at least 260bhp & even more torque. But as had been said - you need to change a scooby to get a decent car suited to your own requirements... new springs, ICE, PPP upgrade etc.

First mod should always be rear ARB and links. Bracing is a waste of time on a chassis as rigid as the Impreza, until you've uprated springs, dampers, ARB's and bushes anyhow. Air filter's OK, as long as it's the right one and in conjunction with the resonator/ram-air scoop removal

Slower in which conditions exactly? Seeing as it rains for 63.5% of the time in this country AWD is essential for any car with 200 BHP+

There is no doubt the Focus is a good looking car, I get noticed by all ages and both sexes. Its also in the right conditions a very quick car, Its far from the uncontrolable beast that has been writen about in the magazines. It is however useless in the snow.

Thanks for all your comments, In conclusion I think I need to go for a less than new STI with PPP. The WRX as I understand is a bit to soft and with not enough of a difference if any in speed. I think I would be disappointed.

"essential" LOL, only from a Subaru driver would you get that quote.

I'd also check your 63.5% stat, as I'm 100% certain it does not rain over 231 days of the year in England.....
