Bleeping on Start Up
Did I read somewhere that a bleep when you start the car indicates that the Battery is knackered??
What actually bleeps, is it the alarm?

Hi Pete,
I am assuming that you have the standard Sigma alarm setup on yours, if so and the car beeps when you are cranking the engine then yes I would say it is indicating that your battery is getting a bit old and in need of replacement. Its the same when you reconnect the battery, the alarm will beep at you.
Mine was the same when it got to about 4 years old, a new one cost me about £35 from a reliable garage and made a big difference when starting the engine ... it felt more ALIVE!!
Instead of chug, chug, chug, then fire it was more like chugachugachuga brrrmmm!!
Nezz.

Pete, had the car not been used for a while ? I have the Sigma on mine and it will bleep on starting if the battery voltage is low if I dont drive it for a while - battery has enough charge to start the car OK, but needs a spin to recharge it fully.
I dont think it necessarily means your battery is shot ( mine is fine and recharges and holds the charge with no problems ), its just a warning thing built into the alarm.
Also, with the Sigma, if your battery goes really low ( under a couple of volts ) the alarm will go off quietly all the time until you start the car.

Surely a 40 year old IT geek such as yourself has figured out how to use the search function on SNet. The Sigma alarm beep question has been covered many times
Anyway what are you worried about, it still starts the car, just like your 60k old brake pads still haven't reached the wear indicators. No need to waste money changing it yet.

Interesting, my Legacy bleeps too, didn't know it was the battery, although the car is a little sluggish to turn over when it's cold.
Think I'll get my retarded main dealer to get me a battery, but I'll fit it.

Needs a cocklink fitted .....
... or your battery is on the way out and needs replacing
(I got a new battery under warranty to fix this problem - something to do with the alarm going off after thinking that your battery is being half-inched)

Cheers all ..... well, the battery is now 6 years old and has started the car maybe 8,000 times so I guess it's done well?!
I'll try and get through to the warmer weather and then it will go on easily until November
