Not sure why anyone would say that.
I owned a MY99 Sti from Japan for six years and it was superb. It went very well, had great suspension although this can vary between cars. With AP 6 pots it made a fabulous track car. Did lots of track days, a few drag events, 60k on the road and the engine was still going strong. Gearbox needed a strip down as a non-critical component broke down in the box and so it needed cleaning out.
Overall a great, great car.
Warranty was never an issue as it did not go wrong.
Good luck with your search.

Take a look on autotrader at your kind of budget and see whats about.
If possible try and find one that was imported into the country brand new and has full uk history. There are quite a few My99-2000 cars like that about

All depends what you want from it - all down to individual preferences
Lighter, faster, more agile and more raw - now you're talking

I went for a 98 WRX because you get climate control and electric folding mirrors, which are cool full stop. Plus my rev counter's in the middle, not the speedo. And the bonnet is light as a feather. Downsides - pricier insurance and can't run it on cheapo unleaded. But who cares when I can fold my mirrors in with one press of a button and cruise into my garage unscathed?

I have a Japanese Domestic Market WRX on an 02 plate - yes, it's a bugeye.
I have had it for 27 months and driven 40,000 miles in it. I am very happy with it and prefer the stiffer chassis over my previous classic shape Impreza.
Compared to a UK WRX, it has more toys (e.g. rear wash wipe, electric folding wing mirrors, alloy bonnet, 250bhp Vs UK's 220) but they also have down sides too e.g. 2 pot front brakes limited to 112mph (both now sorted )
Ideally, if you are looking at an import...get an STi (if I ever have another Impreza, it will be a JDM STi) and get as new a version as your budget allows

Yes the new age are heavier, more refined (as in better power progression) and yes they do have better safety measures (ABS, EBD etc) but having owned a classic and a blob eye, i wouldnt go back to the classic, it just isnt in the same league

the only downside i can think of is the MPG, can easily do 300miles a tank on the classic STI, but only can get 210max on the newage STI, both with the same mods!!

Also I have driven a Spec C which is the most agile of the newage cars and my RA has it beat there too.
As for being in different leagues - again depends what you want it for - for me, I'm interested in it being the ultimate trackday tool. So you're right - it's in a different league to the newages

By the way, I am referring to classic and not newage - just in case you misunderstood
