Rebuilds
Hi there
Can some explain why there so many scoobys with rebuilds ?
Do they get to a certain milage then the rebuild is needed or is it the way they are looked after ?
Cheers

I would hazard a guess that less than 5% of Subaru engines need an early rebuild.
If you modify an engine to operate beyond its design limits then you are staring at an engine rebuild sooner than would be the case.
If you abuse the engine and don't service it correctly then you are looking at an early rebuild.
Engine rebuilds get posted on here, the engines just going and going do not post - it can skew your view .............. put the pslewis specs on and it will become clearer!!
Subaru build bullet proof engines ............ fooook with them at your own risk.

The vast majority of Scooby engines that go pop are the older JDM models, designed to run on 100ron octane petrol which were often brought into country with dubious history, or not remapped for uk fuel immediately.
Uk engines do let go from time to time, but rarely without good reason: improper servicing, abuse, poorly researched mods etc....
As for the others, well there are bad apples in every barrel.

But the fact is that, statistically, the vast majority of premature -if thats the right term- engine failure occurs in JDM cars. The simple truth is that they were designed for a different market - and a good proportion of the older ones have little history, are getting on a bit and have gone though a few owners, and it's difficult to ascertain if the UK owners have used SUL and octane booster etc...
There are some out there that have been maintained properly and last the distance and you -it would appear- have one of them.
Its a fallacy that UK cars have weak engines though. They're strong units if looked after properly, as are the JDM engines.

and has no history (done my own servicing every 2k miles)
the reason they blow imo is people try and do daft 3 figure speeds, and they're not built to do that.
How many rally cars do over 120 on a stage???

It was the oil pump that caused mine to fail......
....but there can be many reasons for it. It is true that you generally only hear the horror stories on scoobynet though as people usually come here for advice when something has gone wrong.
There aren't many "my impreza made it all the way to asda today with no problems whatsoever" threads...
