Default Buying Advice

Looking to buy an unmolested Impreza Turbo 2000.

Was mainly looking down the trader route, but don't like their prices.

Am certainly considering buying privately but don't want to buy a lemon

I'd probably get an inspection before buying.

Any tips on choices (RAC, AA, Other) or is taking it to a Subaru Dealer for a check up worth it?

Any things I definitely need to check (Compression, Old Check Engine Codes etc....)

Any particular things I should be looking for pre inspection?

UK Car

1 Owner

Full Subaru Service History for at least the first 5 years - Independant after that is OK

NOT raced or tracked

NOT modified

NOT owned by anyone under 40 years old

Is it a Chav selling? Walk away.

Wagons are best

Plenty about, so you CAN demand the above ...........

Best advice = DO NOT BUY A CHEAP ONE!!!!!

You say about not buying cheap - What if you could get a trade buy?

Something that has been taken in Part-Ex at a main dealer (Not Subaru)?

Add to that list:

Must have gold wheels

Don't listen to anyone else, Blue is the fastest colour

But seriously, make sure it has the prodrive certificate if it's been PPP'd (a slightly molested model)

Usual questions about the car and the owner, most of which are covered above. Get a feel for whether the owner cares for the car? Does he know what oil goes in it, what petrol does he use. Where has it been serviced (FSH critical) etc...

1) See the car, if you like it, put a deposit on it and agree a provisional price SUBJECT TO INSPECTION!
2) HPI check
3) Get a specialist to look at it!!
4) buy car and smile!

Is a car with 1 careless owner necessarilly better than a car which has had maybe 3 considerate owners
The specialist I have used for servicing is much better than any franchised profiteer (s)dealer, and anyone with any knowlege of the Scooby community will respect that.
Race/Track is a valid concern, but it depends on the level. I only track at my own events where the car is driven with consideration to the mechanicals and serviced to suit before/after. TBH, it's under more risk of damage when driven on the road
Modifications come in all shapes and sizes. If they are well thought out and significantly improve the car without compromising its reliability or mechanical integrity then why not.
The age comment is puerile.
The chav comment is valid.
Wagons are personal preference, just a shame they don't do STi wagons any more.
