Default STI vs WRX running costs

Hi All,

I'm having a dilemma regarding what car I want to buy. First it was WRX then Focus ST and Astra VXR came to mind, Now I'm thinking an 05 plate STI.

Insurance is no biggie as it's only £50 more than the WRX, Servicing isn't too bad, £200 at 10,000 (hopefully the one I've seen will have had this. £200 at 20,000 miles and £400 at 30,000.

Obviously brembo brakes are a bomb to replace, does anyone have an idea?

Does anyone know what sort of MPG figure the STI has compared with the WRX? (I'm guessing people migfht do seeing as this is scoobynet )

Much Appreciated.

Alan

I wouldnt have thought mpg would differ that much between the two. Not so much that it matters anyway. Both pretty crap. Just make sure you drive all the cars b4 you pick one. Been a few threads on here about people who buy WRX then wish they had STI. Or people who cant live with the ride and more hard core characteristics of the STI and wish they bought the WRX. After purchase price, costs are as similar as makes no difference. Pick one that suits your needs best. If you want max performance then get STI. Better every day usability then pick WRX. Or if your needs are a totally crap car then ST or VXR.

Any minute now.......

Not all bad then but not too great, Gash at maths, what would I get out of a tank roughly.

I do 30-40 miles a day, would aim for a tank to get me to work and back for 5 days. Well hopefully.

I would think after buying the car that running costs are near identicle.

If you buy a WRX you'll only wish you'd have bought an Sti

That's not too bad, I averaged 200 - 240 to a tank in my Type-r. Although the stats on the Type-r MPG were better to begin with. on;t know whether that's a good thing or Bad.

If I can get to work and back for £200 per month I think I'll be happy

Agree with driving both before buying. I drove all 4 (WRX, WRX PPP, STi, STi PPP) decided I prefered the characteristics of the STi.

I average about 18.5 to the gallon in MY05 STi PPP.

I get about 27mpg out of my 05 wrx ppp in fairly heavy commuter traffic (lots of 1st gear action).

On a motorway cruise I can get about 340 miles out of a full tank before the red light comes on.

If you can get 260 miles from a tank in an STi then you should be driving a fiesta not a scoob .....

I concur with 340miles from a tank on a WRX300 (= wrx + ppp) as long as you keep the turbo off ( ie under 3000rpm but in 5th means you can do 75-80 on a motorway)

However, give it some welly, let that turbo rip and they just wolf fuel...but then so do all turbo cars!

At least this way you have the 'choice'

BTW - I don't lust after an STI!!

Same here on my wrx 300 PPP.
If I drive it normally then can expect circa 300 on average run. Not bad at all.
And I LOVE my 300 to bits....................

I ran Bugeye WRX for nearly 2 years then got STI PPP. WRX very slightly better on petrol though not by much. I found that I prob had my foot down more in that than the STI. Insurance and servicing negligibly higher too with STI. Well worth it though and I would never go back to WRX. Loved it to bits but STI is totally different car and has 'grin factor'. As said above u might settle for WRX then wish u had gone for STI.

Me too, I do not lust after a STi, (I think they do look fantastic) I only lust after my 300 ever time I think of her............. I needed something with the looks, the drive, the power and more importantly as a everyday car I needed something decent on fuel. And I got it big time.

I've had 350 miles out of a tank in my WRX PPP, and when I stopped to fill up it took 51 litres to brim it, meaning there was IRO 9 litres left so I could have got over 400 miles at an average of 32.75mpg. I was keeping bang on 70mph, just under boost and bored to death, but wanted to see what it could acheive FWIW I love my WRX PPP, especially with the chassis & suspension mods I have made which makes it very difficult for STi's to get away from me I also have an STi rear wing which goes some way to appeasing the STi desires, but I have to admit that next time it will be an STi for me.

BTW, the Brembo's aren't a bomb to replace the pads in. IRO £90, so similar to what you'd pay for a set of decent aftermarket pads on a WRX. Discs might be pricey, but they can be found aftermarket too, and some dealers are known to replace them under warranty
