Just keep a receptacle handy to pour excess fuel in (pour it back into the fuel tank when your done). Leave the car for few hours, or overnight before changing the filter, to allow pressure to die off (unless you fancy trying to disable the fuel pump), that way the system won't have so much pressur inside, so you won't spill as much fuel, lay an old rag under the conections to catch any spillage (and dispose it/wash it when finished).

A bit of petrol wont kill you (don't rest your spanners by the battery terminals = sparks ), And wash the area off with water if you do spill a large amount.

You'll probably find the hoses to the filter will not budge. And you may damage them in vain effort to pull them off the filter, so be prepared to order replacement hoses.

A receptical is just something (bowl, empty tub etc) to catch any petrol that may come out of the hoses.

By leaving the car unused for a number of hours before you start (over night), the fuel pressure inside the hoses you are about to take off will be lessened (less will come squirting out).

Are there any clever ways to depresurize the fuel system without getting fuel everywhere?

Yes...deactivate the fuel pump (NOT ECU) and try starting it a few times.

But the only way I know of doing that on a classic shape Impreza is to pull the connector on the fuel pump relay (which is a bitch to get at...behind the gauges on the far right of the bulkhead) Or remove the rear seat base and disconnect there. The fuses kills the ECU, so it won't depressurise (as the injectors won't open).

Too **** for a few squirts of petrol imo

Yep remove the fuel pump fuse, start the car it will run and then cut out as no fuel is being pumped,Replace the filter,Then the fuse,Prime the pump 4 or 5 times by switching the ignition on(not cranking) for 30 seconds.Switch off and back on.Now start car.

get 2 two pence coins put the pipe in between the 2 coins so you can clamp the pipe so as to not let any fuel out of the pipes

easy example put a 50p coin on the floor get a drinking staw and lay it across the centre of the coin now get another 50p coin and lay it on top of the straw and other coin now apply pressure to the top coin pressing down you sould now have no way of fluid passing through the flattend piece of straw/pipe

Ooooops, forgot the **** Procedure advice ..... remove crank sensor, bonnet and seats .... turn engine over exactly 13 times whilst singing the hit song 'I'm a Fuel' ....

Reset the ECU and remove spark plugs, take car mats out of car and wave them in the direction of Japan 4 times each ......

Take off the mudflaps and push the car until the wheels are resting on 1 mudflap each - prevents static electic, see??

Replace seats and bonnet ...... put back crank sensor ...... start car.

Do NOT go over 1258RPM for 2354miles and gradually increase engine speed by 50 RPM a week .... your engine will probably need a complete re-build but this is the only way you will avoid a melted piston AND WORSE!!!

The **** advice is to take it to 'Massive Mikey' of HTI Engine Rebuilders, only 'Massive Mickey' has the magic touch

Evening Pete! Thought you'd post your excellent opinions before long! Although, I have to agree with Pete on this one. Probably the easiest service part on the scoob, surprised you actually needed advice.
You'll be asking how to put petrol in the impreza next!

You are clearly new around here ....... the furry hood should be worn between the butt cheeks whilst unscrewing the filter hoses - failure to do this will result in your Turbo siezing up (apparently, if the fur hood is worn over the head fine particles get inside the Turbo!!)
