i have a guy from Ireland interested in buying my car!
Is there anything i should watch out for? is there a scam i am not aware of?

just seems odd to me that someone would pay 300 quid to come over on a plane to look at a car!

what should i look out for!!!

100%. If i found a scooby/m5/m3 etc etc etc i really wanted and it was say in leeds or birmingham or watever. Get you send a few pictures and ask few questions defo make sure it should be good when i go over. Fly over and drive back to hollyhead and get boat back. Nothing mad about it!!!! Remember less choice over here. So say yours might be exactly wat this lad wants then he could be waiting 10 years for something he likes to come up here. Most of us aren't as tight with cash as you lot over there over a fiver. Even if added extra £500 to cost of car most couldn't give a **** and make weekend and drinking roadtrip outta it and £500 down as a litte fun holiday or watever. You'll agree with me fully there FLAT4IRE i'm sure????

wouldn't be overly concerned about it - can fly across for beer money these days. There are more motors to choose from on the mainland, prices are lower possibly due to the aforementioned point and there is less laundered diesel - only relevent if you are after an oil burner off course.

Pikeys wouldn't buy used, and it would have to be a toyota hiace van!!!

I would be more wary of the payment method than the lad himself - large amount of cash etc.

A lad came over from Belfast to buy my £1200 405 Mi16 back in August last year, nice lad and all above board, though he did bring Northern Bank Irish notes which worried me at first.

He got a cheap flight to Liverpool, then a train up here, then got the ferry back, only cost him about £100 all in I think.

Seriously, beware of someone using a long journey as leverage for getting a bigger discount than you wanted to give on account of you not wanting to send them away empty handed.

Also be aware of bankers draught scams. These must be confirmed as authentic by the bank during opening hours. A common trick is for the person to arrive late (after the banks close) and protest that they can't stay overnight until the banks re-open.

My Advice: be straight, agree a provisional price, subject to inspection. Make it clear that you want to do business, but you will not hesitate to keep the car if the price isn't right.

Also state from the outset what method of payment is acceptable to you and that the car will not be released UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES untill the payment has cleared.

I sold my last car to an Irishman (also married an Irish lady!) it is certainly not unheard of to fly over to find cars, this next piece of advice has nothing to do with your chap being Irish but I would always ask for cash and take him with you to your bank and put the money in straight away and then hand over the keys, any honest person would not uhave a problem with that, a lot of fake bankers drafts out there...

Many people have genuine reason not to want to carry large somes of money around with them, so you shouldn't be suspicious of someone who doesn't want to pay cash.

Bankers draughts are fine, but they MUST be confirmed as authentic by the bank that issued them prior to being accepted as payment!

Personally, I reckon CHAPS transfers are the best method. The money is transferred straight into your account, totally secure, quick (same day) and no concerns about fraud.

Fair points but must be pedant for a moment: banker's 'Draft' / 'sums' of money...sorry could not help myself!

Also never heard of CHAPS? have heard of a BACS transfer, same thing?

Why would you be worried about large sums cash??? If i was buyng your car i'd get sterling changed before i went and if decided to buy hand you the 5-6grand or watever it was??????

Yep a good guy from Edingburgh flew down from Scotland bearing a large pile of cash to buy my STI. I met him at Cardiff airport with a suitcase full of bills and history.

I also flew to Glasgae a few years back to buy a rare UK sunny GTIR.

Nowt unusual with it these days.

I buy most of my trucks in the UK and also if I saw a car I wanted I'd buy it also, just better roads=less wair and tare on a wagon.
Just be weary about a bankers draft on a friday evening, i've heard of a few scams.
P.S I'm not a pikey but when i'm rich enough i will be ...
