No bonnet legality
Is it illegal to drive on public highway with no bonnet on?
I have to pick a carbon bonnet up but it's not going to fit in my bug eye sti is it and at the moment can't find an associate with a boot space large enough!

It's illegal as there are moving parts that are accessible and could cause injury - not sure what the punishment is - maybe just a producer to get it fixed but don't quote me.

Cheers for the responses
I asked about posting, but its a private sale and the guy is hesitant as liability for damage and loss etc. He has no proper packaging to make it worse. It's about 80 miles away up the motorway maybe if i left at the right time of day ...

just say its a new prototype that you are testing for the governments secret materials lab (they may say they have not heard of this but thats okay, just tell them its because its a secret)
Seriously though, as the car would no longer be standard then it could mean your insurance is void and the cops if you did get pulled if they are being arsey could possibly do you for no insurance. Dont think it would help fuel economy either, and there are possibilities of doing damage from debri etc

Worst case is you get a defect notice, and told your car cannot be driven from that point onwards, and you'll have to get it recovered.
Although there is strictly nothing in the MOT regarding the presence of panels. It would be down to an MOT tester's discretion.
But what the MOT says and the law says are two entirely dirffernt things.
Anyway...think outside the box.....GET A ROOFRACK!

get a van for the day for 50 quid.May seem a little bit of a waste of money but just say debris becomes entangled in belts or pulleys and hey presto its mega money repair bill time.Suddenly that 50 quid van seems so perfect.

i drove my old nova about for a couple of days with no bonnet after i rebuilt and dropped in the engine.
never really thought that it would have been an issue :S
the fact is that if you were stopped - you can say your on your way to pick up a new one, and you can even give them the blokes telephone no. to verify that.

There are rules about the protection of pedestrians.
It includes a minimum distance between the underside of the bonnet and any engine part,
supposidly to prevent an pedestrian getting more seriously injured by hitting the solid engine.
I know this becaue during the design of the New Jaguar Coupe the engine was too close to the bonnet
and it has a "Pedestrian saftey deployment system" on it where in a low speed front inpact crash the bonnet
fires up to increas the gap between the engine and pedestrian allowing the pedestrian to only collide with the
relativly softer bonnet.
Was so funny to watch during testing when they were finding the right level of charge to set on the bonnet,
we had bonnets flying off at mental speeds
Don't know what punishments are for not having a bonnet are but I guess there is something out there
to get done for else we wouldn't have bothered designing such a feature in

Have you still got the old bonnet? - If so you could drive up there with old bonnet attached and then change over at the sellers, and mail your old bonnet home (wrapped in bubble wrap etc which you've taken up there)??

Simple. Just remove it and if you get stopped just say another copper told you to take it off as he reckoned the scoop was dangerous/illegal.
Sorry, more seriously a van is maybe the safest option - or paying a courier?

If the law states that there is a minimum distance between engine and underside of bonnet, I'm sure that you will comply with current regs if you let plod know that you have 2 bonnets and both are miles away from the engine.
