Default wrx mpg

Just got back from a 320 mile trip which I managed to do on one tank. Normally I don't get anywhere near this but I was being paid travel time so why rush? Managed to keep it between 2500-3000rpm all the way. This meant empty motorway cruising of between 60-70. Unless you have tried it you can have no idea how hard this is!

Previously the most I have had is 260 usually 220 though.

53L=11.66Gallons

320/11.66=27.44mpg.

P.S.Lewis aside how the hell do others claim to get above 30mpg?

Soon to be remapped (for power but hopefully cruising mpg should climb too). Do remaps make that much difference? I know they are better but people claim to do this with mixed driving!!!

And before I get flamed with the usual - shouldn't buy a subaru if you are worried about fuel - That's crap, just because I own a subaru and drive for fun doesn't mean I don't have to drive long distance sometimes.

BTW Standard 53 WRX with STI spoiler. Surely the spoiler doesn't cause that much drag?!

Your car has a cd of .39 IIRC due to the scoop and spoiler in part. Doesn't help the consumption at all.

I do 300 regularly and as much as 350 on a run. You must be a faulty driver or weigh a lot?

F
PS lets post our consumption figures here

It's cold starts and short runs with stop/starts and lots of gear changing which gobble your fuel in any reasonably big engined car - but keeping it below 80mph ( ie keeping the turbo from spooling up) on a run and you should easily get 350-400 miles from a tank...not nearly as much fun of course but at least it's achievable when needs must...

Hi Tuts,

I've just been through exactly the process that you're going through.

I used to get ~330miles from a tank when sticking to 75mph on the motorway. I worked it out at about 31mpg's.

Normal driving to work and back used to return about 24mpg's, spirited driving used to be <20mpg's.

I had an ecutek remap a couple of months back and the fuel economy is now horrendous compared to before.

At best I get 25-26mpg's on the motorway, getting no more than 240 miles from a tank of fuel (although I never let the fuel light come on).

Normal driving to work returns about 20-21mpgs with spritied driving......f**k knows, I haven't dared to work it out!!!

It WILL make a big difference to your fuel economy and not just because you put your foot down more. The only possible exception that I can think of is if my car had to be mapped to run exceptionally rich to get the required power gains. I will be buying a fuel/air gauge soon which will hopefully give me a better indication if this is the case.

Don;t be put off though, it's well worth the extra fuel and cost to have 265bhp instead of 215bhp (bugeye) and 348.8Nm torque, (~258 lb/ft).

Ok, if you go the PPP router to 265 bhp should improve due to extensive testing by Prodrive I guess.

How to get good mpg

1) keep revs below 2700rpm and minmise gear changes
2) do not break hard and steer hard into corners

Had to do this when running in the wrx and averaged ~33mpg

It's possible but a pretty boaring way to drive (but when the wife is in the car she hates to turbo wosh and resultant torque; which I love, so I'm restricted and when she's in the car I get 30mpg easily)

Given the technique above, my best mpg figures :-

Nissan 200sx (1996 Mark II) 29mpg (might as well trash it as it never dropped below 27mpg)

Toyota Celica GT (1998) 45mpg (maidenhead to Durham, constant 65mph)

Honda Acord Type R (mark II 2001) 37mpg (maidehead to Wales; constant 58mph)

Scooby WRX (2005) 33mpg (running in car)

Around town the WRX drinks fuel, but its ok on a 20+mile run .

Please don't label me an mpg junkie, I just know you can match if not better manufactuer's quoted mpg if you employee certain technques.

Have a fun car to have fun in but sometimes you have to drive long distance.

If i did this:
hehe so how does 50ltr and 100 miles sound i **** you not
It would have cost me £150! Or take my time and do it for £50. Which would you do?

Just think, that is £100 you can put towards having fun or more upgrades.....
